God’s Gift of Forgiveness
Annual Welcoming & Commissioning Day

A long-standing tradition in the
Diocese of San Jose took place on September 11 at Santa Teresa Church in San
Jose with the annual Welcoming and
Commissioning Day. This is an opportunity for pastoral ministry leaders to
renew friendships, meet and welcome
newcomers.
Featuring the theme of “God’s Gift
of Forgiveness,” the day featured a
special liturgy, in English, Spanish
and Vietnamese and a commissioning
ceremony presided by Diocese of San
Jose Auxiliary Bishop Thomas A. Daly.
“It is important to have this annual
event,” said Wendy Scherbart, Diocese
of San Jose Catechetical Ministry Director. “It is a time to gather and inspire
people to their ministry.”
Scherbart introduced a commissioning ceremony for 13 ministers in
English, Spanish and Youth/Young
Adult Ministry.
Those awarded Certificate for Advanced Catechist were: Verne Quiazon,
Anabella Estrada, Alde Vera, Araceli
Zarate,Yolanda Toulet, Joselyn Corona,
Patty Rascon, Deacon and Jaime Garcia.
Receiving Certificate of Master
Catechist were: Joann Maier, Brother
Anthony Nguyen, Susan Lee Olsen,
Elsa Michel and Maria de Jesus Gutierrez-Garcia.

two-year Youth Ministry Certificate.

Speaker for the event was Fr. William (Rusty) Shaughnessy, OFM, Parochial Vicar in Huntington Beach and
former Retreat Master at San Damiano
Retreat Center in Danville.
“If you have hope, you have faith,”
he said. “We could easily spend a whole
weekend talking about forgiveness; it is
a life-long passion. If you are grateful
about something it is really hard to be
unhappy.”
Shaughnessy said a lesson to life is
simple.
“We have to be humble,” he said.
