Bishop McGrath ’ s Statement Regarding DACA
We echo the sentiments of the Bishops of California and the United States in expressing our disappointment with the decision to rescind DACA ( Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals ). We call upon Congress to pass laws that protect these young people , many for whom the United States is the only place they have ever known .
We also ask Congress to enact comprehensive immigration reform , to fix our broken system and , in so doing , to place the unification of families as a priority .
Working with Catholic Charities , the Diocese of San Jose will continue to offer outreach , support and encouragement to all who are affected by policies and laws that touch so many of our people .
I conclude by quoting the statement of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops : “ As people of faith , we say to DACA youth – regardless of your immigration status , you are children of God and welcome in the Catholic Church . The Catholic Church supports you and will advocate for you .”
Save the Date Celebrating ILM ’ s 20th Anniversary
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Institute for Leadership in Ministry . On Wednesday , October 11 at 7:30 p . m ., the Diocese will come together for a Mass of Thanksgiving at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph in San Jose . It is hoped that alumni , faculty , pastors , pastoral teams , current students and all those who have supported the Institute throughout the years will gather for prayer . After the Mass , there will be a reception .
The ILM was originally established under Bishop Pierre DuMaine to meet the growing need for competent , trained leaders for the Diocese of San Jose . In 2002 , the Diocesan Pastoral Plan identified three critical issues : lay leadership , youth and young adults , and the Catholic Social Teaching of the Church . The Institute became the primary vehicle for lay leadership development . Anne Grycz was the first director and served until 2010 . Linda Cunha-Ricchio has served as director since that time .
Since its founding in 1997 , more than 900 individuals have completed the program . The majority of them are still involved in active ministry today . During the years , the curriculum has continued to evolve adding content to enrich and improve on the original foundations .
We are grateful to Bishop McGrath for his ongoing support , to his predecessor , Bishop DuMaine , and to all who have contributed to the good work of the Institute . May God continue to bless the Institute this year and for many more to come !

Local Contributions to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development Making a Difference
Barbara , a single mom , arrived at the door of the Learning and Loving Center , Morgan Hill , speaking little English and unemployed . Thanks to your generous donation to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development ( CCHD ) Barbara received language skills , vocational skills and leadership training . Empowered , she is supporting herself and her son by working full time teaching computer classes to other low income adults to enable them to move out of poverty .
CCHD is the Gospel at work and
Catholic social teaching in action . Giving options for the poor , defending the human dignity of all people , training leaders among low-income workers and seeking housing and just-wage employment opportunities in our communities , the Catholic Campaign for Human Development grant to Working Partners U . S . A . has assisted countless individuals both locally and nationally . They have been able to provide intensive training in leadership for contract workers in Santa Clara County .
With the money provided by last year ’ s collection for CCHD , young people have been trained for community leadership , and immigrants have learned their rights through programs at SIREN ( Services for Immigrant Rights and Education Network ).
The Mountain View Day Workers Center used your donations to provide leadership training for members to canvas in neighborhoods to get out the vote in support of community housing stabilization , resulting in institutional change , one of CCHD ’ s goals . The Learning and Loving Center has taught literacy , offered job counseling and computer training to more than 160 women while providing childcare for moms during their extensive coursework .
These are examples from our local level . Nationally grants have also lent a hand to organizations in their quest for economic development and justice for low-income people and communities . This once a year collection occurs on Sunday , November 19 , in the Diocese . Your continued generosity will make a difference in the lives of many members of the Body of Christ .
