IN THE DIOCESE

Statements from Bishop Patrick J . McGrath
Presentation High School
I commend the courageous women who have come forward over the past year to cast light upon the abuse that they and others experienced while students at Presentation High School . Through these difficult times , they have stood with one another in solidarity .
Over the past few months , I have met with some of the victims and listened to their stories and concerns . I hope that the announcement today by the Board of Directors of the change in school leadership will allow the victims , survivors , their families , and the Presentation High School community to take the next step on the path of recovery and wholeness .
The Diocese of San Jose is committed to a safe environment for all and extends support to victims / survivors and their families through the Office for the Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults – ( 408 ) 983-0113 .

Retirement House
When I began plans to retire , and considered where I would live , I had wanted to remain in the Diocese of San Jose . This has been my home for nearly 20 years . At first , I had hoped to live in a diocesan-owned house that is located on cemetery property , but necessary retrofitting proved to be too costly .
This made it necessary to look for another house . The Diocesan Finance Council and the College of Consultors approved the purchase of the home in the Willow Glen neighborhood of San Jose . I agreed with them that in economic terms the purchase of the home made sense in terms of financial return on investment . It was bought primarily with funds that had been designated for this sole purpose , funds that had accrued from the sale of Bishop DuMaine ’ s condominium , when he was no longer able to live in it due to failing health .
However , I erred in judgment in the purchase of a 5-bedroom home for $ 2.3 million . I failed to consider adequately the housing crisis in this valley and the struggles of so many families and communities in light of that crisis .
I have heard from many on this topic and I have decided that I will not move into this house . The Diocese will put it up for sale as soon as possible ; if there is any profit to the Diocese from that sale , those funds will be donated to Charities Housing , a division of Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County .
I assume full responsibility for this decision and I believe that the sale of the house is the appropriate action . I thank those who have advised me . When I retire , I now intend to live in a rectory at one of our parishes . August 27 , 2018

October : Month of Prayer for Reconciliation and Healing

Bishop McGrath , in conjunction with the Diocesan Liturgical Commission , has called on all parishes to dedicate the month of October , Mary ’ s month , to prayer for victims and survivors of sexual abuse by clergy , and those who enabled them .
On Monday , October 1 , there will be a prayer service at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph , beginning at 7:00 pm . Every parish is asked to send representatives to this service . The bishop will commission those representatives who will return to their parishes as “ a tangible sign of our unity in prayer .”
Each parish is asked to celebrate “ an evening of prayer and adoration ” on one night each week in October . This night will vary from parish to parish , depending on parish schedules . Please check your parish bulletins regarding when this will be in your parish .
In his letter to the priests , Bishop McGrath noted just some of the reasons to gather for this prayer : “ Prayer for victims and survivors , prayer for the purification of the Church , prayer to continue to strengthen efforts aimed at the safety of children and all vulnerable persons and , finally , prayer to build up in Christ the Church as an instrument of God ’ s peace .”
All are invited to the Cathedral on October 1 for this evening of prayer .
