Saint Francis High students spend summer in new challenges
Saint Francis High School students spent their summer break pursuing intellectual inquiry, experiencing new cultures and volunteering to help underserved youth. Three seniors share their stories. Cindy Wang received a full scholarship to the 2013 Telluride Association Summer Program and for six weeks at the University of Michigan she participated in a seminar course on food studies. She looked at food economically, socially, philosophically and environmentally. She also met other motivated students from diverse backgrounds and said the experience whetted her appetite to continue learning. “My viewpoint has been broadened,” she said. “I have a more critical perspective, and I’m questioning myself and others more. I want to be more aware of, not just current events, but also literature and history.” Nirav Murthy spent part of his summer on a school immersion trip to El Salvador during which participants learned about the Salvadoran Civil War. Students stay in a rural village and partner with a community leader who provides resources for disadvantaged young people.
