Fifth Graders Set the Tone for New Student Learning Expectations
In the first month of school, fifth
graders are already making a differ-
ence in Saint Leo School’s community.
Many of the skills needed in the
age of globalization and technology go
beyond textbook content. To prepare
for the future, students must engage
in meaningful learning opportunities
through collaboration, problem solv-
ing, research, and critical thinking.
These skills will allow them to achieve
academic success, have an impact on
communities, become leaders, and
make a difference in the world.
In mid-September, the fifth grad-
ers served as role-models for Kinder
through fourth grade students. Work-
ing in self-selected groups, t hey
developed an engaging and effec-
tive presentation of the new student
learning expectations (SLE) to the
students, staff, and several parents.
Through an amazing medley of skits,
songs, and even a catchy rap solo,
they transformed our SLEs into real
life scenarios.
Toget her t hey learned how to
become better students and how to
should treat each other and the com-
munity. The laughter and applause
from the audience demonstrated how
much the elementary students enjoyed
this educational experience.
Rich History of the Parade of Champions and Saint Clare
The Santa Clara Parade of Champi-
ons has been a time-honored legacy in
Santa Clara since 1945.
The Santa Clara Parade of Cham-
pions, for 50 years, has been a leading
community building organization that
raises awareness and funds for char-
ity to serve those that need it most.
Community building also includes
partnering, networking, creating op-
portunities, and supporting other non-
profits that share the values of charity,
education, service and volunteerism
– it’s together that we can do the great-
est good.
The parade showcased Santa Clara’s
champions from civic and community
leaders like the mayor, city council
and manager all riding in vintage
convertibles; to floats featuring local
businesses, little leagues and scouts;
school teams, olympians, Santa Clara
Swim Club, Aquamaids, the police and
fire departments; the newly crowned
Miss Santa Clara and her court, as well
as the S.E.S. Queen and Princesses –
all proudly waving throughout the
parade.
Saint Clare School has a wonderful
tradition of being involved in the com-
munity and was represented by both
students and parents in both the parade
and the Homestead Village showcasing
an informational booth. Parents were
proud to share school community ex-
periences with potential future Saint
Clare parents.
Many alumni came by the booth to
share what wonderful experiences they
had attending Saint Clare School.
This year, the Parade of Champions
remembered Larry J. Marsalli (June 4,
1926 – July 2, 2018). He was co-founder
and Chairman of the YMI Annual
Parade of Champions for 50 years. Mr.
Marsalli was also a longtime parishio-
ner of Saint Clare, ICF member and grill
master (Italian Catholic Federation),
and his three children also attended
St. Clare School.
