Friends in Faith sponsor Mass for people with special needs

The Diocese of San Jose has a ministry for people with disabilities which
originated at Holy Family Parish in San
Jose several years ago when parishioner Judith Troutman and her daughter Michele, along with then parish
Catechetical Director Blessie La Scola,
formed the Friends in Faith Committee
on Catechesis to deal with the topic.
The Committee works with DSJ
Catechetical Director Wendy Scherbart
to raise awareness through education
and training on disability issues. A
by-product of their work is to help parishes make their facilities, especially
churches, accessible to people with
special physical needs, for example,
wheelchairs, or the blind or hard of
hearing.
A Mass for people with special
needs was celebrated the evening of
Sept. 19 at Santa Teresa Church, San
Jose, presided by Bishop Patrick J.
McGrath who gave the homily, noting,
“We have gathered here this evening as
the friends of Jesus that we are, together in his name, and also as members of
one family.
“In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus
invites those who are weary and carry
heavy burdens to find rest and refreshment. Jesus is calling us to R & R! He
knows the burdens that are ours, since
he himself became one of us, human
in every way, tempted in every way,
prone to illness and suffering, just as
we are. He teaches us that eternal life
is our destiny.
“Tonight we celebrate the love of
Christ that held nothing back: obedient even to death on the cross. Our
suffering is sometimes more visible,
more obvious. But it also unites us and
enables us to understand and appreciate the distress of others.
“If we want to see the face of God we
may look in the mirror or at the person
closest to us. In God’s wondrous love,
each of us shares the dignity of being
children, heirs, those made in God’s
image and likeness,” Bishop McGrath
said.
“May we see in our lives and in the
lives of our loved ones signs of God’s
grace by which each of us is invited
to be grace and to be a blessing to our
world. Remember always, that in the
Lord Jesus, in his Church and in one
another, each and every one of us can

The bishop expressed his delight “at
this opportunity to celebrate Mass with
so many who are great gifts to God and
to our diocese. I thank God for you -you are gifts – you are encouragement
for all of us.”
Judith Troutman also initiated the
“Awakenings” column which runs occasionally in The Valley Catholic, written
by an array of people who deal with
disabilities personally or as caregivers
or professionals in a variety of fields.
Troutman explained then that
the articles would deal with living
with extreme situations – physical or
mental disability, or a severe medical
condition. Her daughter Michele was
the premier columnist who told of her
