Bishop McGrath Delivers Annual State of the Church Address
The second Thursday of October meant Bishop Patrick J . McGrath ’ s annual “ State of the Church ” Address before those gathered at the Catholic Professionals monthly breakfast meeting at Three Flames Restaurant in San Jose .
Before an attentive crowd , the Bishop outlined some of the events that have happened in the Diocese of San Jose ( DSJ ) since he last spoke to the group in September 2016 .
Here are some of them :
• Brian Mooney has taken over for the late Bob Serventi as Chief Financial Officer .
• The Diocese ordained two priests last June – Father Khoa Vu and Father Gabriel Lee .
• And DSJ moved its seven seminarians from Saint Patrick ’ s University and Seminary in Menlo Park to University of Saint Mary of the Lake in Mundelein , Ill .
The Bishop said the move to Mundelein , as the seminary is known , was 18 months in the making .
“ They are dedicated to the principles of the Second Vatican II ,” he said . “ And those of course are the principles of the Diocese of San Jose as well . They are off to a good training of our priests .”
In addition , Bishop McGrath spent time discussing the governance of the 26 elementary schools in the Diocese . Currently the schools are broken down into Parish School , Diocesan School and

Drexel School . The Diocesan and Drexel schools both fall under the governance of the DSJ Department of Education .
“ We have one school system and three ways of governance ,” said the Bishop . “ We have seen incredible academic success with the Drexel Schools . Of course I want all of our schools to be in good shape , succeed and thrive .”
Also , the Bishop touched on the hiring of Father John Hurley , CSP , as the Vicar for Evangelization . What was known as the Office of Parish Services is now called the Department for Evangelization .
“ The purpose of these changes is to be more responsive to the needs of all parishes and deaneries ,” said McGrath .
The Bishop also took a moment to recognize Bill Matthews , an organization board member , who is retiring this month as the Director of Stewardship & Development for the Diocese .
“ You have been a steady hand , Bill ,” said the Bishop , “ and taken the ADA ( Annual Diocesan Appeal ) to a whole new level . We are going to miss you , but your retirement is well deserved .”
