Two Seminarians Ready to Take a Step Closer
to Priesthood in a Familiar Place
By Liz Sullivan
For John Hoang and Victor Trini-
dad it is time for the pair to celebrate a
milestone on their path to ordination
as priests on November 3 at Saint Vic-
tor Parish.
The pair will be ordained transi-
tional deacons for the Diocese of San
Jose with a Mass celebrated by Bishop
Patrick J. McGrath at their home par-
ish. Godwilling, in the spring of 2019
Hoang, 30, and Trinidad, 31, will be
ordained to the priesthood.
“It’s fi nally here,” said Hoang, who
will be the second American-born
Vietnamese priest, for the Diocese of
San Jose. “I am ready for this next step.”
Trinidad will be the fi rst American-
born Filipino priest to be ordained for
the Diocese.
“There were some bumps along the
way, but you have to trust in the Lord,”
said Trinidad. “I am glad it has worked
out the way it has.”
This is the third straight year the
Diocese has ordained seminarians as
transitional deacons. Overall, with
their expected priestly ordination,
the Diocese will have ordained seven
Seminarians John Hoang and Victor Trinidad
men to the priesthood.
“I am very excited that we are or-
daining two as transitional deacons,”
said Diocese of San Jose Vocations
Director Father Ritche Bueza. “Thanks
to the hard work of (former Vocations
Director) Father Joe Kim. The two we
are ordaining are very fi ne men. The
Lord continues to call people of good
hearts to work in His vineyard. And I
can say that about Victor and John, they
have very good hearts.”
For Hoang this moment will be bit-
tersweet. His mother Theresa passed
away in May. His father went up to the
Lord two years ago.
“I know they will both be with me,”
he said, with a smile.

sitional deacon ordination look for
