Welcoming Mass for Cristo Rey High School
News from St. Mary School Gilroy
• Fifth graders at St. Mary School Gilroy receive bibles
Fifth grade students at St. Mary
School, Gilroy received bibles at a special
school-wide Mass on September 23. Fr.
Vincent Pineda blessed the bibles, and
students were encouraged to read them
frequently with great love and faith.
To commemorate receiving the bibles,
the fifth graders made special bookmarks, and love reading their bibles
during “free reading” time. Bibles are
an important part of our Catholic Identity at St. Mary School. They are used
extensively during 5th through 8th grades.
Fifth graders may create storyboards
or perform skits based on bible passages.
In sixth grade, students use bibles frequently as they study the Old Testament
and work on a Jesse Tree project. Seventh
and eighth grade students work on
“SOW” (Scripture of the Week) projects.
• Students visit Sunset Beach and study sand crabs
Eighth graders at St. Mary School
Gilroy visited Sunset Beach on September 25 to study sand crabs as part of the
LiMPETS program, an environmental
monitoring and education program
for students, educators and volunteer
groups throughout California.
The students visited the same beach
in the spring and returned in September to compare data, which goes into
a database that is accessible and used
by scientists all over the world.
Before students enter their data,
they make predictions, based on past
years monitoring available on the
database, and present graphs giving
evidence for the predictions they
make. They then enter their data and
see how their predictions compare.
Mrs. Georgia Stern, St. Mary School
junior high science teacher, said “it
is a nice way to show how evidence
is important, how difficult it can be
to make predictions unless you have
enough - in this case a year’s worth –
evidence, and how even if you do have
the long term evidence you can still
get it wrong.”
