San Jose Deacon Community Celebrates Diversity 16 Fri, 3 p.m., Internal Office meeting, Diocesan Offices, San Jose
The Diocese of San Jose is among
the most diverse dioceses in the nation
and the San José Deacon Community
is a microcosm of that amazing diver-
sity. The deacon family is comprised
of thriving cultures and rich histories
that are reflected in our multicultural
expressions of faith.
On September 22, Sabina and Deacon
Sunny Offorjebe, along with the Saint
Francis of Assisi Parish Nigerian Igbo
community, gifted our deacon commu-
nity and friends with a traditional Igbo
service that featured singing, dancing
and a history of the Catholic Church
in Nigeria. Did you know that French
missionaries were the first to bring
the faith to Nigeria however, it was Tues, 9 a.m., Internal Office meeting, Diocesan Offices, San Jose
Tues, 5:30 p.m., Dinner with Bishop Paul Tighe, San Jose
Irish missionaries who made a lasting
impact on the country’s Catholic faith?
As you might expect the beautiful and
extravagant traditional Nigerian dress
was a highlight of the evening.
This was the second spiritual cul-
tural event that the San Jose Deacon
Community has sponsored. Last year,
our Vietnamese deacons and their
wives shared their prayer traditions.
Both events featured warm and deli-
cious hospitality and expanded our
understanding and appreciation of
both cultures. Our exploration of the
ethnic diversity within the San Joseé
Deacon Community will continue as
we learn to unconditionally embrace
the differences among us.
