16 CATHOLIC SCHOOLS November 5, 2019 | The Valley Catholic Bellarmine Students Assist Nonprofit in Supplying Filters to Those in Need of Clean Water Bellarmine College Preparatory students, faculty, and staff gathered for an assembly held October 14, during which they heard from Doc Hendley, founder and president; and David Cuthbert, CEO; of Wine to Water (www.winetowater.org), a nonprofit organization committed to supporting life and dignity for all through the power of clean water. After school that day, more than 400 students returned to the Patrick Wayne Valley Memorial Gymnasium on campus to assemble 850 filters that will enable people in Nepal and other countries to have access to clean water. Each filter serves a fam- ily for up to 10 years and can clean hundreds of gallons a day. “It was a very powerful day,” noted Chris Meyercord, Bellarmine president. “The boys were motivated by the speakers, and they heard such great lessons – about Doc’s resilience growing up; about the importance of discernment; about finding our gifts and talents and putting them at the service of others; about expanding our worldview and seeing beyond our preconceived not ions; about making a difference in the life of the person right in front of you.” This unique experience was an- other example of how Bellarmine provides opportunities for students to use their talents and gifts for the benefit of others, and to grow in character as members of a global community. Bellarmine students assembled filters to help those in need of clean water. Saint Lucy Food and Fun Fest Celebrates 33 years Members of the Saint Lucy School community were grateful that the Saint Lucy Fun Fest was able to light up the night sky for a 33rd year in Campbell this Oc- tober. Fun Fest is more than a typical school carnival fundraiser. It is a weekend-long celebration of the welcoming and supportive Saint Lucy School commu- nity, drawing crowds of school families, grandparents, parishioners, alumni families and people from the City of Campbell and the surrounding areas. It would not be possible without the hard work of our Saint Lucy School faculty and parents, current and alumni, whose dedication to the students and school is amazing. Saint Lucy Fun Fest is an event for guests of all ages, filled with fabulous food (who doesn’t love the apple pie?!), fantastic entertainment, Parent volunteers gather after another successful event. the annual alumni reception, carnival rides and games, and both a live and silent auction. There is something for everybody. A special highlight is Fun Fest Friday night’s Alumni Reception, where the school is proud to welcome back over 200 alumni, parents of alumni and teachers from the 1950’s through the most recent grads from the Class of 2019. Every year the school also honors parent volun- teers who are graduating from Saint Lucy School, working their final Fun Fest shifts as current parents. Their dedication and passion for the school over the years has not gone unnoticed. Principal Sue Grover added, “Twenty-three families celebrated their last official Fun Feast. It was wonderful to still see their excitement carry over the many years. They will be greatly missed, but will hopefully return to the Alumni Reception.” Student Council Raises Awareness for Pediatric Cancer Student Council is an important part of our leadership group at Holy Family School. Becoming a member of student council means leading the morning prayer, attending meetings, and coordinating events on campus. More importantly, they are the stu- dents that set an example for leader- ship and peacemakers at our school. The eight student council members began the school year by bringing awareness to the National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Mrs. Caron and Mrs. Lecheler, the student council teacher coordinators, organized a “Be A Hero...Go For The Gold” fundraiser to raise awareness and money for Childhood Cancer Research. Students purchased free dress day for $5 and wore “Gold” on October 9 in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness. The entire student body and staff were given yellow ribbons made by student council to wear. Student Council raised $675, which will be donated to Lucile Pack- ard Children’s Hospital for Pediatric Cancer Research. Holy Family School is proud to do their part in helping to raise money to find treatments and cures for those children fighting cancer. Way to “Be A Hero and Go For The Gold” Holy Family! Joining Forces at Resurrection School The sixth grade and Transitional Kindergarten Buddy classes at Resur- rection School in Sunnyvale came together to create fall placemats for the residents of Belmont Village.
