The Holy Doors of Mercy in the Diocese of San Jose Closed
The Diocese of San Jose officially
closed the Jubilee Year’s Holy Door
of Mercy at the Cathedral Basilica
of Saint Joseph during the 11:30 a.m.
Mass on November 13.
Bishop Patrick J. McGrath officially
opened the Holy Door at the Cathedral
on December 13, 2015. The Jubilee
Year of Mercy ran from December
8, 2015, the Feast of the Immaculate
Conception, to November 20, 2016, the
Solemnity of Christ the King, before
the start of Advent.
Pope Francis designated the liturgical year as the Year of Mercy to symbolize the blessings that God wants
to give to anyone who asks. The Pope
invited every Catholic diocese in the
world to establish a Holy Door in its
Cathedral. The Holy Father wanted

the doors to be where the faithful
could encounter God’s mercy and be
strengthened to be merciful to others
as God has been merciful to them.
In the Diocese of San Jose, there were
three Holy Doors: at the Cathedral, Our
Lady of Guadalupe in San Jose and Our
Lady of Peace in Santa Clara.
