It was a night of music , laughter , prayer , thanksgiving and a trip back to the future as Archbishop Mitty High School held its 25 th Annual Black & Gold Gala on November 5 at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose . The event was hosted by the school ’ s Board of Regents and saw close to 1,000 people in attendance .
“ Thank you all for coming and making this such a special evening ,” said Mitty Principal Tim Brosnan .
Diocese of San Jose Bishop Patrick J . McGrath offered the Invocation before the three-course meal and words of thanks .
“ I am very delighted to be here and give thanks to all things , but especially Archbishop Mitty High School and especially Tim ( Brosnan ) and all of the tremendous work he has done over the years .”

Jay Leno stopped in to congratulate the AMHS students who performed on the Black and Gold stage .
Among the highlights of the evening were performances by Jazz In The AM – Jazz Band , The Royals Dance Team and special appearances by Mitty alumni .
Alums Noah Collins and Shawn
Clifford , Class of 2015 , served as emcees during the musical portion of the gala . The pair took attendees on an adventure “ Back to the Future ” and 1992 when Principal Brosnan was deciding to have the inaugural gala . Class of 2010 alumnus Matt Hill , in the role of “ Doc Brown ” from the movie traveled back in time to prevent antagonist “ Biff ”, who had stolen a time-traveling DeLorean automobile , from talking Brosnan out of holding the first event and thus preventing subsequent galas .
Long-time former Tonight Show Host Jay Leno was the featured performer . Leno capped the evening and performed for almost 75 minutes where he touched on current events across the entertainment , political , religious and sports worlds .
Proceeds from the Gala benefit the IMAGINE Campaign in support of the John A . and Susan Sobrato Science and Student Life Center . The IMAGINE Campaign supports the new Science , Technology , Engineering and Mathematics ( STEM ) building and student commons at Mitty .
Red Ribbon Week at Holy Family School
Drug free , that ’ s me ! The Student Council at Holy Family School organized the Red Ribbon week activities and created different opportunities for the school community to learn more about making good choices . Red Ribbon Week is a time where students receive additional education regarding the dangers of cigarettes , alcohol , and drugs and the benefits of choosing to live a healthy life .
Holy Family School kicked off Red Ribbon week at Morning Prayer , where each class shared a cheer and created a poster demonstrating their pledge to be drug free . “ Don ’ t buy drugs , just give hugs !” was amongst the many clever cheers recited .
Another day students from each class planted red and white flowers to remind them of the promise they made to continue making good choices throughout their lives . Our middle school students attended an assembly hosted by the Wellness Services Department of Asian Americans for Community Involvement . Students were able to hear stories , learn about the dangers of drugs and alcohol , and role-play how to avoid giving in to peer pressure .
At the conclusion of the week , students were invited to wear red shirts to show support and commitment of all they had learned . After all , the students acknowledge , “ Drugs aren ’ t funny , they ’ re a waste of money !”

Saint John Vianney Kindergarten Police Visit
On October 24 , Saint John Vianney School Kindergarten welcomed some very special visitors . Captain Anthony Mata of the San Jose Police Department visited to talk with the students about a police officer ’ s job and about Halloween safety . He read a story about police officers and taught the students three important lessons about respect , education , and being healthy . The students were surprised and so excited when three of Captain Mata ’ s co-workers from the K9 unit joined us in the classroom with two of their German Shepherd police dogs . The officers expertly fielded questions ranging from whether the dogs eat healthy to if the dogs like to play , even when the officers are driving .
The special visitors came at a perfect time , with Halloween around the corner and the students having just completed their October community service project , which thanked law enforcement officials for all they do , the Thursday before .
