Violence Affects Us All

On April 19, in observance of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week,
the Office of Restorative Justice of the
Diocese of San Jose hosted a prayer
service at Our Lady of Guadalupe
Parish to remember and honor those
affected by violence. Pastor Father
Jon Pedigo welcomed and invited all
present to pray together for an end to
the violence which impacts families,
friends and public safety officials in
our communities and neighborhoods.
Deacon Ruben Solorio led the faithful
in prayerful remembering.
Attendees placed photographs of
loved ones on a table in front of the altar
and two women shared their personal
stories of sudden tragic loss.
Karen spoke of the devastating
shock of losing her parents who were
both killed instantly by a 19-year old
drunk driver in a car accident in which
she, too, was a passenger, leaving Karen
and her younger brother orphans at a
young age.
Mary Kay spoke of the murder of
her oldest son, Paul, who was fatally
stabbed by two 18-year old men looking for drug money as he walked
home from watching a game with his
co-workers. Paul had been in law enforcement for thirteen years and had
recently graduated from Law School,

Sister Rosemary Carroll, CSJ
Religious for 57 Years
St. Joseph of Carondelet Sister
Rosemary Carroll died April 24. Sister Rosemary was 75 years old and a
religious for 57 years.
Sister Rosemary attended San Francisco’s St. Monica School and graduated
from Star of the Sea Academy. She ministered in Northern California for 45
years at schools including St. Emydius
and Star of the Sea in San Francisco,
Our Lady of Loretto in Novato and was
principal at St. Patrick School, San Jose.
“Sister Rosemary was both a loved
teacher and principal for almost 50
years in Catholic elementary schools,”
the sisters said in a statement.
Sister Rosemary is survived by a
sister Holy Names Sister Colette Carroll
of Campbell.
A funeral Mass was celebrated
April 30 at Carondelet Center in Los
Angeles with interment in Holy Cross
Cemetery, Culver City.

Also present was Kris, whose 20year old niece, Morgan, was struck and
killed while riding a bicycle. The family
continues to mourn her recent loss.
The Diocese of San Jose provides
spiritual support for people who have
lost loved ones to violence. A support
group meets monthly to provide a safe
space for individuals to share their
stories and process of grieving in a supportive and confidential environment.

Villa Siena Holds Successful Bocce Ball
Tournament Fundraiser
Villa Siena - Senior Living Community in Mountain View held its 5th
Annual Charity Bocce Ball Tournament
at Campo di Bocce on May 4. Proceeds
from the event went to support Villa
Siena in continuing its mission of providing comprehensive compassionate
care to senior residents, after they have
outlived their financial resources.
Twenty-three teams participated in
round robin play, with the top teams
then competing in the single elimination play. The First Place Team, Young
Craig & Co., included team members:
Dennis Young, Lonnie Gary, Bernie Panelo, Mark Leardini, Bonnie Aitken and
Mario Zhu. Second place was captured
by the Gilmore/Kelly Team, with team
members: Terry Gilmore, Leilani Santos,
Caprice Wummer, Jim Kelly, Jim Kelly
Jr., and Cindy Kelly.
Students from Notre Dame High
School acted as court referees. A silent
auction, raffle prize drawing, and “Closest to the Pallino” game were also help
to raise additional funds.
