Statement of Bishop Oscar Cantú – Ongoing Pastoral Care and Support for Victims/Survivors
Bishop Oscar Cantú respects the
decision of those dioceses in the state,
who have chosen to participate in the
California Independent Victim-Survi-
vor Compensation and Reconciliation
Program.
There are many avenues for re-
sponding and caring for the victims-
survivors of clergy sexual abuse; the
Diocese of San Jose continues to work
directly with victims-survivors focus-
ing on accountability and healing.
Providing an opportunity for victims-
survivors to be heard and know the
Diocese believes them aids in their
healing process.
The Diocese of San Jose is not par-
ticipating in the California Indepen-
dent Victim-Survivor Compensation
and Reconciliation Program. Victims-
survivors continue to receive assistance
from the Diocese, including counseling
or spiritual direction and referrals to
support groups.
The Diocese strictly adheres to a

protective services, in accordance with
mandated reporter laws, when abuse is
reported. The Diocese cooperates with
law enforcement during any necessary
investigation.

local law enforcement and is one of six
dioceses to voluntarily present those

documents.
The Diocese of San Jose regularly en-
sures that our clergy and all mandated
reporters in its parishes and schools
have completed the required training
through Santa Clara County’s Depart-
ment for Family & Children’s Services
and reminds them about their obliga-
tions to report to law enforcement.
Even those who are not mandated
reporters are reminded of the moral
obligation to be aware of the signs of
child abuse and to report it when there
is a suspicion an abuse as occurred.
In the spirit of transparency, the
Diocese of San Jose is carefully review-
ing the request and intends to cooper-
ate with the Attorney General’s Office.
