Our Lady of Peace shrine
to dedicate statue of
Pope John Paul II
Appointments of Bishop Patrick J. McGrath
MARCH
San Jose Bishop Patrick J. McGrath will dedicate a
replica 7-foot bronze statue of Pope John Paul II to be
erected April 27 at Our Lady of Peace Shrine, Santa
Clara. That is the date of the canonization in Rome of
the late pope along with the canonization of Blessed
Pope John XXIII.
Father Gustavo Nieto, IVE, pastor of Our Lady of
Peace Church, said, “It is an honor to bring home such
a marvelous sculpted image of St. John Paul. We do it
not only to honor him but also as gratitude and as an
expression of love for his teachings, for his paternal
care, for his exemplary and tender devotion to Mary,
for his tireless missionary endeavors, and ultimately
for his inspiration to live the spirit of the beatitudes in our daily lives.”
Prior to the dedication of the statue, Bishop McGrath will preside at a special
outdoor Divine Mercy Mass at 2 pm. A full day of activities include: Confessions, 7 am to 9 pm; Rosary procession after the dedication; the Shrine’s Library
Open House, 4 to 7 pm, followed by a reception.
Videos on the life and canonization of John Paul II will be viewed on a large
movie screen at the Family Learning Center; free.
The parish has a first class relic of John Paul II (containing pieces of his hair)
which will be exposed for public veneration and prayer. Holy cards with St.
John Paul II’s image will be available.
The original statue was sculpted by Albano Poli of Verona, Italy and was first
on display in the atrium of the Papal Basilica of St. Paul (in 2008) before going
to its final destination, the Cross of the Third Millennium in Coquimbo, Chile.
‘Get On The Bus’
helps children of incarcerated parents; funds needed
Sister Elaine Coutu, CSJ, of San Jose,
coordinates “Get On The Bus” (GOTB)
in which California children and their
caregivers are bused to visit a parent
who is in prison.
For dads, it is done the day before
Father’s Day and for moms, the day
before Mother’s Day, at no expense to
the family. Sister Elaine seeks funds for
the bus, insurance, meals, and for the
photo taken of each child with their
parent. Backpacks are needed for the
children, and gift bags for caregivers.
Inmates in some prisons are involved
in fundraising within the prison.
Another need is volunteers (two
together) to visit families to do paperwork required by the prison system;
training is provided. Sister Elaine is
Bus Coordinator for the San Jose area.
She is available to talk to church communities of any denomination, or any
groups, and to show a DVD that depicts
the event.
She has information that shows how
this visit is beneficial to the children,
who are the focus. Contact her at [email protected] or 408-223-2802.
