Teachers , parents , students , and donors gathered the weekend of February 25-26 to dedicate the John A . and Susan Sobrato Science and Student Life Center , the newest building on Archbishop Mitty High School ’ s 26-acre campus .
The new facility , which opened its doors to students in January , provides spaces for students to study physics , chemistry , computer science , and robotics . The building also houses a variety of community spaces including Student Activities , Outreach , a student lounge , a conference room , and an outdoor terrace . Bishop Patrick J . McGrath led AMHS parents and supporters in Mass at the Fien Gymnasium on February 26 , before leading a procession out to bless the new building .
“ As many of you remember , we gathered here a little over one year ago to officially break ground on this beautiful new facility that we dedicate today ,” said Tim Brosnan , the principal of Archbishop Mitty High School , as he addressed the crowd before Mass began . “ This is a testament to this school ’ s unwavering commitment to the education
of the ‘ whole ’ child . Nothing could be more symbolic of that commitment than the composition of the new Sobrato Science and Student Life Center .”
Mass was followed by an Open House , during which donors explored the facility ’ s five science classrooms and watched as students used 3-D printers and cutting edge robotics design equipment . The new building contains state-of-the-art equipment but – equally important – promotes

community building , an integral part of the school ’ s mission . The first floor of the new facility holds a spacious student lounge where students can sit with friends and chat , meet with student groups , or get some homework done . The room has floor-to-ceiling windows , which face the Schott Family Commons , the inner courtyard at the center of campus .
The other wall of the lounge holds a 71-foot quotation wall , which includes
a dozen inspiring quotations that call students to be creative , hopeful , loving , communal , spiritual , and just . The center of the quote wall proclaims “ Made in the Image and Likeness of God ” and recognizes part of the AMHS mission , that every person has talents and abilities that are made in God ’ s image .
“ We , indeed , are committed to a first-class science education , and we take seriously the responsibility of developing the next generation of scientists and engineers needed to solve many of today ’ s problems ,” Mr . Brosnan said . “ But as a Catholic school , we are committed to developing young people who are not only smart problem solvers , but who possess a strong moral compass and who embrace Gospel values … The student life center on the first floor of the new facility makes it clear to students that they are all made in the image and likeness of God .”
During the dedication , Mr . Brosnan thanked the construction team , the diocese , the Board of Regents , and donors for making the building possible .

Saint Joseph School , Mountain View Backdrop for National Morning Show
By Liz Sullivan
It was just a typical Tuesday during Lent when Anne Nowell was asked to take a phone call in office at Saint Joseph School , Mountain View , where she serves as Principal . On the other line was Brian O ’ Keefe , a producer for “ Good Morning America .” O ’ Keefe wanted to know if he , a television camera crew and correspondent Nick Watt , could come to the school two days later and interview students about happiness and the path for achieving it .
After running the request through the normal protocol channels at the Chancery of the Diocese of San Jose the crew arrived Thursday morning , March 9 ready to film .
O ’ Keefe said he came upon the school ’ s name by searching for “ private schools in Mountain View .” Nowell admitted when she heard the press was calling she thought they were seeking comment about Saint Francis High School and its financial success after the Snap IPO . These two schools border each other .
Nowell and her staff pulled students from various grades and had them playing on the playground while Nick
Watt went up to them and asked them about happiness .
In addition , also being interviewed at the school was Google ’ s Mo Gawdet about his new book , “ Solve For Happy .” Google in based in Mountain View .
“ It was such a delight to have the “ Good Morning America ’ crew come to our school ,” said Nowell . “ Nick Watt spoke to our students about their ideas about happiness and the children were delighted to share their thoughts . The author of , “ Solve For Happy ” wants to share his concepts of happiness and believes that as children , they do honestly achieve happiness every day and wants adults to remember to do the same , no matter what obstacles come their way .”
The piece was expected to air on March 21 .
