The Valley Catholic catholic schools CATHOLIC EDUCATION INSPIRES St. Christopher School students donate to local causes St. Christopher student Ellie Peyton at work in the Ladies Guild Antique Show café. 7 St. Justin School girls raise funds for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society St. Christopher School (San Jose) eighth graders made donations to four organizations as a result of their work at the 44th annual Ladies Guild Antique Show. Traditionally, students volunteer to wait tables and clear dishes in the show’s café. This year the students worked over 650 hours and earned $1,900 in tips. This money was given to four causes: San Jose Downtown Streets Team, the Northern California Chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, Sisters of the Presentation ministries, and St. Christopher Parish Outreach. St. Clare School celebrates - ‘Year of the Horse’ St. Clare School, Santa Clara, held its annual celebration of Lunar New Year, Jan. 31, at the parish hall, beginning with prayer led by Principal Madeline Rader. Students participated in various roles: parading in Vietnamese and Chinese traditional dress, and storytelling and performing a dragon dance. Huy P., in eighth grade, gave a presentation of the traditions and history of Lunar New Year. There was a lion dance and the student explained the representation of each part of the lion’s body. Teachers, faculty and staff were presented with red and yellow flowers and traditional “lucky money” envelopes. Father Tad Terembula, parochial vicar, and students, faculty, staff, and parents had lunch and celebrated Lunar New Year. Bellarmine presents Golden Bell Auction Bellarmine College Preparatory (San Jose) will hold its 38th Golden Bell Auction, Sat., March 29, themed to “An Evening in Roma.” The night will begin with a silent auction during an hors d’oeuvre and cocktail reception, followed by fine dining prepared by executive chef Jim Stump; chefs Marty Cattaneo and Philippe Breneman, both Bellarmine alumni from the Class of 1997; and the Bellarmine culinary staff. KRTY Radio morning personality Gary Scott Thomas will be auctioneer for the live auction featuring a concert, community . March 11, 2014 an autographed SF Giants jersey; and dining experiences at South Bay establishments. Proceeds benefit Bellarmine’s direct financial aid fund. With 25 percent of the 1,600 students receiving tuition assistance, the school’s fi nancial aid budget this academic year is $4 million. The event will take place in the Patrick Wayne Valley Memorial Gymnasium on the Bellarmine campus, 960 West Hedding Street, San Jose. Sophia Rodriguez, fourth grader at St. Justin School, Santa Clara, approached Principal Karen Suty with the idea of raising money to help fight cancer, inspired by a TV program she had seen. Sophia decided to support leukemia research because it often affects children. She created her first poster for Ms. Suty’s office door and began to plan. Four St. Justin friends – Julia Mallari, Ellen So, Ally Hernandez and Brielle Brady -- joined her and planned a fundraising bake sale at the SJS basketball tournament. The five girls collected baked donations from fourth grade families, sold cookies and brownies for $1 and raised over $300 which they presented to Ms. Maribel De La Torre, Senior Donor Development Manager of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (Greater Bay Area Chapter).
