eighth graders made donations to four
organizations as a result of their work
at the 44th annual Ladies Guild Antique Show. Traditionally, students volunteer to wait tables and clear dishes
in the show’s café.
This year the students worked over
650 hours and earned $1,900 in tips.
This money was given to four causes:
San Jose Downtown Streets Team, the
Northern California Chapter of the
Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, Sisters
of the Presentation ministries, and St.
Christopher Parish Outreach.
St. Clare School celebrates - ‘Year of the Horse’
St. Clare School, Santa Clara, held its annual celebration of Lunar New Year,
Jan. 31, at the parish hall, beginning with prayer led by Principal Madeline Rader.
Students participated in various roles: parading in Vietnamese and Chinese
traditional dress, and storytelling and performing a dragon dance. Huy P., in
eighth grade, gave a presentation of the traditions and history of Lunar New
Year. There was a lion dance and the student explained the representation of
each part of the lion’s body.
Teachers, faculty and staff were presented with red and yellow flowers and
traditional “lucky money” envelopes. Father Tad Terembula, parochial vicar, and
students, faculty, staff, and parents had lunch and celebrated Lunar New Year.

Ms. Maribel de la Torre (l) accepts $300 check raised by Ally Hernandez, Brielle Brady,
Sophia Rodriguez, Ellen So and Julia Mallari of St. Justin School.
Sophia Rodriguez, fourth grader at St. Justin School, Santa Clara, approached
Principal Karen Suty with the idea of raising money to help fight cancer, inspired
by a TV program she had seen.
Sophia decided to support leukemia research because it often affects children.
She created her first poster for Ms. Suty’s office door and began to plan. Four St.
Justin friends – Julia Mallari, Ellen So, Ally Hernandez and Brielle Brady -- joined
her and planned a fundraising bake sale at the SJS basketball tournament.
The five girls collected baked donations from fourth grade families, sold cookies
and brownies for $1 and raised over $300 which they presented to Ms. Maribel De
La Torre, Senior Donor Development Manager of the Leukemia and Lymphoma
Society (Greater Bay Area Chapter).
