Three Ordained as Permanent Deacons: “To be Another Christ”
By Liz Sullivan
As they gathered with members of
their families, their parish communi-
ties and other faithful from the Diocese
of San Jose, three men were ordained to
the Diaconate on May 19 at the Cathe-
dral Basilica of Saint Joseph.
Carl A. Bugarin, Philip Andrew
McCarty and Richard M. Noack were
ordained before approximately 600
people in the Cathedral for the two-
hour Mass.
“The scriptural foundations of the
Diaconate do not raise too high a bar:
Only that deacons be “reputable, fi lled
with the Holy Spirit” and they be
“dignifi ed, not deceitful, not addicted
to drink, not greedy for sordid gain,
holding fast to the mystery of the faith
with a clear conscience,” said Bishop
Patrick J. McGrath in his Homily. “To
put it plainly, the deacon is to be “an-
other Christ.”
“In your parishes and in the context
of the Church that goes beyond parish
boundaries, today by the prayer of the
Church, the work of the Holy Spirit
and the laying on of hands, you are
sent to serve even those whose very
existence you may have not yet sensed,
whose need may be beyond your pres-
ent comprehension,” said the Bishop.
“Like the prophet Isaiah, your message
is one of glad tidings, of binding up
the wounded, proclaiming liberty to
captives and announcing the favor of
the Lord.”
Deacon Bugarin has been assigned
to Saint Victor Parish, Deacon McCarty
to Saint Leo the Great Parish and Dea-
con Noack to Saint Christopher Parish.
“My brothers, today you are ordered
for service in the ways of Christ. Con-
form your lives more closely to His.
Whatever you do, in your speech and in
your actions, do it always in the name
of the Lord,” the Bishop added. “And

take courage, because you will not be
not alone in your work. While it is the
three of you who will be ordained, I
am acutely aware that your fidelity
in ministry will happen through the
loving support of your wives and your
families. Remember always that your
new ministry is not in opposition to
your marriage and family life. Indeed,
it fl ows from and through these gifts.”
On June 2, at t he Cat hedral
Basilica of Saint Joseph, the Diocese
celebrated the priestly ordination of
Deacons Edgar Elamparo, Francis
Kalaw and Eric Piczon.

Dear Brothers in the Diaconate…
Dear Wives of Deacons...
I ask you not to relent in your commitment
to a diaconal Universal Church and a world of solidarity.
You are ambassadors of Jesus Christ
who rejects anything related to authority
and puts human hierarchies upside down like anyone who serves.
You are ambassadors of our incarnate God
who shows solidarity up until death and beyond death.
You are called to accompany other people
on their way to incarnation, in solidarity,
everywhere in the world.
—Pope Francis
