Annual Diocesan Appeal awards presented ...

“ Sharing Our Faith – Together in Christ ” was the theme for the 2013 Annual Diocesan Appeal ( ADA ), held in the early weeks of the year . The Appreciation Luncheon , sponsored by the DSJ Office of Stewardship and Development , for parish staffs and ADA volunteers , took place June 8 , hosted by Holy Family Parish in San Jose .

Father Tony Mancuso , outgoing pastor of St . John Vianney Parish , San Jose , introduced the event . He noted that Jesus talked about stewardship — justice — “ giving people what they need .” He compared it to Jewish practices , noting that charity and justice are intertwined . “ Jesus was all about justice ,” he said .

Bishop Patrick J . McGrath thanked all those who have been involved in the ADA process and the work they do at parishes . He noted that the renewal that Vatican Council II called for created a demand for more funding than had usually been available from the “ cathedraticum ,” the “ tax ” that parishes ( according to Canon Law ) pay to support the work of local dioceses . So , many years ago , the Annual Appeal began .

“ I am very impressed with your faithfulness and commitment to the ADA appeal ,” the bishop said . “ I am always amazed , even in down times economically , with the commitment of the people to this annual effort .”

The Pledge Success Award was presented to St . Christopher Parish , San Jose , which goes to the parish that

The Sobrato Family Foundation has awarded the Diocese of San Jose a $ 2 million matching grant , to jumpstart launch of the St . Katharine Drexel School Initiative , an effort to deepen academic outcomes for more than 2,000 students at seven Catholic schools , creating 21st century school models .

A key component is a strategic partnership between the Diocese of San Jose and the School of Education and Counseling Psychology at Santa Clara University resulting in a new Academy of Blended Learning .

More than 100 teachers and administrators will participate in a year of professional development and receive a new Certificate in Blended Learning to help drive transformation of the schools .

received the greatest percentage of goal pledged .

The Achievement Award is presented to the parish that has achieved the highest percentage of fulfillment for the previous year ’ s ADA . It was presented to St . Clare Parish .

The 2013 Stewardship award was given to St . John the Baptist Parish in Milpitas for extra effort to ensure timely and accurate pledge record-keeping .

The Bishop ’ s Award was presented to St . Mary Parish , Gilroy for having the greatest increase in participation from the previous year and having reached their goal by the end of the active phase of the 2013 campaign .

Sobrato Family Foundation award launches 21st century Catholic education initiative

Catholic education , the Drexel Initiative constitutes a new “ system ” of Catholic elementary education .

It leverages governance models and technology capabilities that make Catholic schools more effective , efficient and sustainable while growing an already strong Catholic identity . Seven elementary schools are participating : Most Holy Trinity , St . Patrick , Holy Spirit , in San Jose ; St Joseph in Mountain View ; Resurrection and Catholic Academy in Sunnyvale , and St . Clare in Santa Clara .

The Sobrato Family Foundation is recognized for its Catholic philanthropy and education — by not only investing financial resources , but also working closely with the institutions that benefit .

Bishop Patrick J . McGrath said , “ The Diocese of San Jose is very grateful to John Sobrato and his family for their continued support in education as evidenced by this lead gift to transform our Catholic schools .”

The National Leadership Roundtable on Church Management will present the Sobrato Family Foundation its Best Practices Award at its 2013 annual meeting , to be held at Santa Clara University June 25 .

“ They exemplify a spirit of collaboration , partnership and cooperation to achieve the greatest amount of good for the greatest number of people ,” said Kerry Robinson , Executive Director , National Leadership Roundtable on Church Management .

The Sobrato Family Foundation is a place-based grantmaker that invests exclusively in nonprofits serving those most in need in Santa Clara , San Mateo and southern Alameda counties .
