Diocese of San Jose Ordains Two Men for the Priesthood
By Liz Sullivan
Saying “Yes” to the Call of God.
On June 1, John Tu Hoang and Victor
Trinidad pledged to continue to say
yes to the Call of God as they were
ordained priests for the Diocese of San
Jose during an Ordination Mass at the
Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph.
Bishop Oscar Ca nt ú presided
and was joined by Bishop Patrick J.
McGrath.
“Victor and John, you have both
encountered the word of Jesus Christ,”
said Bishop Cantú. “Jesus said ‘fol-
low me’ and ‘follow me beyond your
comfort zone.’ Pope John Paul II said
the first time a child encounters God
is from the love of their parents. Pope
Francis encourages a culture of en-
counter. When you encounter God,
you encounter one another. You will
be called today moving forward to lead
the lambs of the Diocese of San Jose
and what will feed them is the love you
have encountered from God; a love that
has transformed you.”

can-born Filipino priest to be ordained

in the Diocese. Father Hoang is the sec-
ond American-born Vietnamese priest.
“I know that God and Our Blessed
Mother have helped me throughout my
journey of discernment to the priest-
hood,” said Father Hoang in a quote
in the Mass’ Worship Aid, “and I am
confident that it is God’s will where I
am today.”
In July, the new priests will take up
their first assignments. Father Trinidad
will be the Parochial Vicar at the Ca-
thedral and Father Hoang becomes the
Parochial Vicar at Saint Mary, Gilroy.
“It is important that you encounter
Christ regularly,” said Bishop Cantú,”
because it will feed your soul. People
will come to you not because you
are good guys, which you are, but
because they want to be fed. They
want to see Christ and they want to
see Christ in you.”

“What started as a simple, uncon-
ditional yes to God has grown to an
abundance of blessings for me, but not
without its crosses,” said Father Trini-
dad, quoted in the worship aid. “Thank
you to my friends and family who have
supported me along the way. I look
forward to what God has next. As Jesus
says, ‘No one has greater love than this,
to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
