Rosio Gonzalez Joins Diocese of San Jose
as Chief Operating Officer
Saint John Paul II once said “Life
with Christ is a Wonderful Adventure.”
For the Diocese of San Jose and
Rosio Gonzalez life’s adventures are
about to merge.
Bishop Oscar Cantú announced in
mid-May that Gonzalez will become
the Chief Operating Officer for the
Diocese. Gonzalez is expected to begin
her position in late June.
It is a homecoming for Gonzalez,
who was born in Gilroy and is a gradu-
ate of San Jose State University. She and
Bishop Cantú worked together in the
Archdiocese of San Antonio when the
Bishop was an Auxiliary Bishop and
Gonzalez was the Department Head
for Pastoral Offices.
“It is wonderful to be back home af-
ter living away for 17 years,” said Gon-
zalez, during a meeting with Chancery
staff. “I am really blessed to be working
with Bishop Cantú and all of you. I can’t
imagine being anywhere else.”
Gonzalez holds a Master of Social
Work with Specialization in Manage-
ment from Washington University in
Saint Louis and a Bachelor of Social
Work from San Jose State Univer-
sity. In addition to her knowledge and
expertise, she also brings a commitment
of service to and passion for the Church.
In addition to working with Bishop
Cantú in San Antonio, Gonzalez led
Catholic Charities of Idaho as its execu-
tive director, served in the Archdiocese
of Washington DC as a Deputy Director
for Catholic Charities, and as President
of the Consortium of Catholic Acad-
emies for the last five years. Gonzalez
has been successful in spearheading
the strategic direction and overall
management of these organizations,
while building strong collaborations
and fiscal strength.
“Rosio is someone who will help us
align our offices,” said Bishop Cantú.
“She is very mission driven. She will
help us in communicating effectively
with each other and those we serve. I
am delighted to work with her again.”
On a personal side, Gonzalez has
been married to William Rainford, who
is currently the Director of Parish Op-
erations at Saint Mark’s Catholic Com-
munity in Boise, Idaho, for 22 years.
They met at San Jose State University.
Their daughter, Mayra Rainford and
grandson, Alessandro, who is 2 years
old, live in Houston, Texas.
“My role is to support all of you in
any way I can,” said Gonzalez to her
new co-workers. “We will learn to
collaborate with each other and serve
with each other as we execute the mis-
sions and the desires of Bishop Cantú
and the Church.”
