2 in the diocese January 14, 2014 Bishops McGrath, Sevilla to celebrate 25th anniversary of episcopal ordination, Jan. 25 Bishop Sevilla, now retired, served as Bishop of Yakima, Washington, 1996-2011. Bishop McGrath was named Coadjutor Bishop of San Jose in 1998 and succeeded Bishop Pierre DuMaine in 1999, becoming the second Bishop of San Jose. Parishioners in the Diocese of San Jose are invited to attend the special Mass and the reception which follows in Loyola Hall, next door to the cathedral. On Jan. 25, Bishop Patrick J. McGrath, along with Bishop Carlos Sevilla, SJ, will celebrate 25 years as bishops. A Mass celebrating their 25th anniversary of episcopal ordination will take place Sat., Jan. 25 at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph in San Jose, 7 pm. They were named auxiliary bishops in the Archdiocese of San Francisco in December 1988 and were ordained to the episcopate Jan. 25, 1989. Bishop McGrath clarifies status of Oratory of Our Mother of Perpetual Help By Roberta Ward In a Dec. 10 letter “To the People of the Diocese of San Jose,” Bishop Patrick J. McGrath explained the status of the Oratory of Our Mother of Perpetual Help in Santa Clara which has been housed since 2006 in a former Protestant church purchased independently. • Full text of Bishop McGrath’s letter may be found on the diocesan website: www. dsj.org, under Bishop McGrath Statements. The bishop explained that he “canonically erected the Oratory to provide pastoral care to people who are attached to the traditional Latin Mass”…and he “entrusted ministry to priests of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest…since Jan. 1, 2007.” Bishop McGrath said, “Because recent internal matters related to the governance of the Oratory could not be resolved in a way that is satisfactory to the Institute, the Institute has now withdrawn from its ministry to the Oratory.” The bishop invited the Oratory board to rescind its decision, but they refused. “Consequently, I must now suppress the Oratory, removing its canonical status as an established and recognized Roman Catholic community in the Diocese of San Jose,” the bishop wrote. Five Wounds Portuguese National Church, San Jose, has welcomed, as of Dec. 15, “the faithful of the newly erected Oratory of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.” In early December, Bishop McGrath explained, “It was announced at Our Mother of Perpetual Help that priests from the Society of Saint Pius X will begin ministry there. This is a matter of grave concern because of the unlawful status of the Society.” Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre founded the Society and in 1988, against papal direction, he consecrated four men as bishops who have been excommunicated for their objections to teachings of Vatican Council II. Bishop McGrath stated, “The doctrinal questions that remain unresolved between the Roman Catholic Church and the Society of Saint Pius X are not insignificant.” COrrECTIOn In the Dec. 10 edition, Page 21, there is a correction to the caption about the Holy Family Prayer Blanket. The woman identified as Bette Elkins is actually Anna Deane. BISHOP’S CHRISTMAS CARD ART CONTEST -- Bishop Patrick J. McGrath annually sponsors a Christmas art project in which young people in the Diocese of San Jose produce original art, the winning entry to be used on the bishop’s Christmas card. In various years, students in Catholic schools and parish religious education programs participate. This year’s first place art (featured on Page One of the Dec. 10 edition) was drawn by Michelle Mallari, now a high school freshman. Bishop McGrath presented her with a framed memento of her work.
