Holy Korean Martyrs Parish dedicates
new church in San Jose

Holy Korean Martyrs Parish in the
Diocese of San Jose recently celebrated
the dedication of its new church and
altar, located at 1523 McLaughlin Ave.,
San Jose. Bishop Patrick J. McGrath presided at the ceremony at the new facility
which replaces the former location on
Weddell Drive, a former warehouse, in
Sunnyvale.
The Korean Catholic Community
began in the South Bay in 1977 (under
the Archdiocese of San Francisco). Then
a small group, the community now has
3,000 Korean and Korean-American
parishioners in the Diocese of San Jose.
When the community began, they
used the gym at St. Lawrence the Martyr
Parish in Santa Clara before moving to
Sunnyvale. They began to outgrow that
location and began a 10-year search for
a new place.
Parishioner Sang Young Jang explained that growth of the parish is
attributed to three key factors: over
70 active small faith groups; over 100
volunteers giving time to catechetical
and liturgical ministries, choirs, and
more; over 200 people involved with
children, youth and young adult programs weekly.
