Order of St. Sylvester awarded to three people in DSJ
Three people in the Diocese of San
Jose have been honored with membership in the Papal Order of St. Sylvester
– John Ottoboni, and Michael Hope
and his wife Bonnie Hope – for special
merit and service.
Bishop Patrick J. McGrath presented
the awards at a reception at his home,
Jan. 14. Awards of the Order of St.
Sylvester are typically made on recommendation of diocesan bishops or archbishops and are sent though the office
of the apostolic nuncio and then to the
cardinal Secretary of State in Rome.
John M. Ottoboni has served as
General Legal Counsel for the Diocese
of San Jose for more than 10 years. He
is also General Counsel for Santa Clara
University. “He is deeply committed to
Catholic values,” Bishop McGrath said.
“I have a great deal of respect for John,
as does our diocesan curia. His first
concern is always for the good of the
Church, and we have been well-served
by him.”
A widower, Ottoboni is active in his
parish of Saint Mary of the Immaculate
Conception in Los Gatos, where he is a
member of the Men’s Prayer Group. “It
is with great pleasure that I nominate
him for the honor of Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Sylvester,”
the bishop said.
Michael F. Hope is a retired Silicon
Valley executive “who agreed to volunteer a few hours per week to spearhead
a project designed to bring the Diocese
of San Jose into compliance with federal
and state regulations pertaining to diocesan personnel – Human Resources,”
the bishop explained.
“This brief commitment has become

nearly a full-time job, one that Mr.
Hope continues to do as a volunteer.
He has brought calm and dedication,
overseeing a project that will affect
every lay, Religious and ordained
member of our diocesan and parochial
staffs,” he said.
Hope has also been chair of the Diocesan Finance Council for a number
of years. He has also been a leader at
St. Cyprian Parish in Sunnyvale and
now Resurrection Parish, Sunnyvale.
He becomes a Knight Commander of
the Order of Saint Sylvester.
Bishop McGrath said, “Bonnie Lynn

Throughout their 39-year marriage,
in raising their four children, Bonnie
remained at home, devoting herself
to her husband and children, so that
Michael could provide for their family and offer himself as a volunteer to
their parish, the parochial school, and
to this diocese.
“Mrs. Hope is a true partner with
her husband in all of the philanthropic
and other ways in which they continue
to support the Church,” the bishop
said. “I am pleased to nominate Bonnie
Lynn Hope as a Dame Commander of
the Order of Saint Sylvester.”
