IN THE DIOCESE
By Liz Sullivan
Joe Naylor ’ s journey has brought him back to the City of San Jose and the Valley of Saint Clare . This time to the Diocese of San Jose . And he couldn ’ t be more excited . Naylor joined the Diocese as the Chief Development Officer ( CDO ) in late July . From 2009-2015 , he worked in Los Gatos as Vice President for Advancement for the Jesuits of the California Province . From there , he became the Vice President for Advancement and Communications for the Northeast Province for the Jesuits in New York City until returning to the Bay Area .
A native of Saint Louis , Naylor graduated from Rockhurst University in Kansas City before moving to Southern California where he worked for more than two decades in fundraising for the YMCA and healthcare
“ When this opportunity became available for the Diocese I was very excited to return and work for Bishop ( Patrick ) McGrath , whom I have great respect for because of his vision and

Joe Naylor pastoral plan and who is someone who is so beloved by his people and wants the best for his Diocese ,” said Naylor . “ In addition , I attended Santa Clara Mission and Holy Spirit Parish , so I was aware of the energy and charisma of Father Brendan McGuire ( Holy Spirt Pastor and Vicar for Special Projects ).”
The position of Chief Development Officer for the Diocese arose with the upcoming retirement of Stewardship and Development Director Bill Matthews . As a result , Diocesan officials realized there was a need for a new position that integrates all diocesan stewardship , fundraising and development into a single office .
“ We are excited that Joe has joined the Diocese of San Jose where we are confident he will enhance and grow stewardship across parishes , schools and other institutions ,” said the Bishop . “ The position of Chief Development Officer will provide forward-thinking leadership , strategic direction and coordination of all diocesan fundraising initiatives and stewardship , including the Annual Diocesan Appeal .”
In addition , Naylor will plan , develop and implement a comprehensive development program to seek the financial resources and fundraising opportunities necessary to support and advance the Diocese ’ s pastoral programs and ministries and to assist parishes and schools with fundraising and stewardship .
“ I am drawn to San Jose because of the openness of its people , the diversity of the community , its focus on innovation and technology and the temperate weather ,” said Naylor . “ I am glad that I don ’ t have to experience another blizzard this winter .”
While previously working for the Jesuits in Los Gatos , Naylor , under the

leadership of John Michael Sobrato and the Provincial , Father Michael Weiler , S . J ., was able to raise $ 27 million for capital needs for the Province .
Naylor has short-term and long-term goals for the Diocese .
To start , Naylor believes that in addressing the needs of the community , there is a great opportunity for partnerships with other organizations in the Diocese , such as Catholic Charities and the Catholic Community Foundation .
“ I want to build upon the successful work Bill Matthews has done with the Annual Diocesan Appeal ,” said Naylor .
A future goal is to have a Diocesanwide Stewardship and Development Boot Camp where clergy and lay leaders in the parishes and schools can enhance their skills in strategic planning , capacity building , grant writing and utilization of social media .
Away from work , Naylor loves to hike and travel . He ’ s been to 54 countries , including many Marian Shrines . He said his favorite shrine is outside of Barcelona , Our Lady of Montserrat , where Saint Ignatius laid down his sword and dagger before Our Lady .
Detention Ministry – The Beauty of God ’ s Love
By Elizabeth Sanville Volunteer Detention Minister , DSJ
In our Catholic faith , the Sacraments of Initiation ( Baptism , Eucharist and Confirmation ) are often received surrounded by family , friends , and our community . For nine years at Saint Lawrence , I prepared high school teens for Confirmation . As we approached Confirmation Mass , in those final days of preparation , there would be the excitement of rehearsal , of shopping for new clothes , the expectation of presents , and the joyful anticipation of parties and special celebrations .
Recently , I witnessed a very special Confirmation . There was no rehearsal , no special clothes , no pomp or circumstance , no gifts or pictures , no parties . There was simply God ’ s unconditional , abounding love and mercy . A young man received the Sacrament of Confirmation during Mass in a small room with a make shift altar , wearing prison garb , surrounded by eight inmates , three catechists and one priest . We sang , prayed , read scripture , ate at the Table of Plenty , and celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving . As I reflect on this experience , I appreciate the beauty of the Sacrament , received in humility , filled with joy and
renewed hope , mercy and forgiveness , new beginnings , the call to discipleship and the promise of eternal life . And those he predestined he also called ; and those he called he also justified ; and those he justified he also glorified . ( Romans 8:30 ) In our Diocese , we are blessed to have many Detention ( Jail ) Ministry volunteers who give generously of their time , under the direction of Sister Maryann Cantlon . This Ministry is simple , beautiful and life giving . Before volunteering , I can ’ t say that I thought about or prayed for prisoners , at least not in any truly meaningful way . However , in ministering , through God ’ s awe-giving divinity , my eyes and heart have been opened to the least of our brothers and sisters , to God ’ s all-consuming forgiveness and mercy , and to a deeper appreciation of our faith and the Sacraments . I am learning the true meaning of focusing on God , on His love , on the grace of the Sacraments . I am thankful for this opportunity , for Sister ’ s guidance and for my fellow volunteers who make a difference , living out their Baptismal promise .
As Saint Teresa of Avila is often quoted “ Yours are the eyes through which He looks with compassion on this world .”
