Robain Lamba Ordained a Transitional Deacon for the Diocese of San José
By Liz Sullivan
A quiet man, with a broad, wel-
coming smile and kind eyes, Robain
Lamba was ordained to the Tran-
sitional Diaconate on July 6 at Our
Lady of Guadalupe Church. Bishop
Oscar Cantú led the Mass with assis-
tance from Bishop Emeritus Patrick
J. McGrath.
The Ordination Mass, celebrated
in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese,
featured the laying on of hands by
the Bishop and the invocation of the
Holy Spirit. Lamba is expected be
ordained to the priesthood in June
of 2020.
“Today, Robain, the Church calls
you to the Order of the Diaconate,”
said Bishop Cantú. “You are called
to serve, especially to those on the
margins. When we want to serve the
Lord, he points us towards his chil-
dren. Robain, may you be a sign of
what is good in the Church, and may
the Lord bless you on this journey.”

priests from Africa, Lamba will be
the first African priest to be ordained
for San José, as he was born in Cam-
eroon. Most of his immediate family
now reside in Northern California.
Before the conclusion of the Mass, Lamba and a couple of children from
the Parish laid flowers at the statue
of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the
Church to pray for more vocations
to religious life.
As Our Lady of Guadalupe is where Lamba spent his Pastoral Year
of study, the Parish hosted a Fiesta
in his honor after Mass.
