Are You a Believer or a Disciple ?

By Kathy Fanger
When Jesus broke the bread at the table with two disciples in Emmaus , their eyes were opened ! They recognized him as the Risen Christ and they asked each other , “ Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us ?” Luke 24:32 When you and I know Jesus , truly know Him , our hearts , too , burn within us .
Jesus said , “ I am the Good Shepherd . My sheep hear my voice , and they follow me .” John 10:27
At the Transfiguration , a voice was heard from the cloud proclaiming ,“ This is my beloved Son . Listen to Him .” Mark 9:7
Jesus came to draw us all unto him . He gave His life for us . He desires to enter into our lives in an intimate way . Jesus said , “ I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly .” John 10:10
This is the Easter message ! It is one of great joy and hope ! Do we simply believe in our heads , or do we believe in our hearts … so much that we , too , feel called to live and proclaim Jesus ’ parting message to his disciples , “ Go , therefore , and make disciples of all the nations . Baptize them and teach them to carry
out everything I have commanded you , and know that I am with you always , until the end of the world .” Matthew 28:18-20
As we move from being a believer to being a disciple we trust in the work of the Holy Spirit .
When we truly know Jesus , we feel compelled to live as He did , seeing Christ in all we meet , welcoming all who come through our path , especially those who need healing , community , forgiveness , and hope . We begin in our lives , with our family and friends , at our work , and in our churches , being the face of Christ and seeing the face of Christ in them . Jesus ’ message is mercy , compassion , God ’ s unconditional love .
This is what we are called to passionately share .
As a disciple of Jesus , you choose a Catholic Cemetery because it is your final statement of faith . You choose to rest among believers , where loved ones gather to pray and look forward to being reunited with you and Our Lord in the Kingdom of Heaven .
Catholic Cemeteries of the Diocese of San Jose wishes you a joy-filled Easter season , feeling your hearts burning within you to know Jesus intimately and share His Presence with others .
