tvc.dsj.org | April 10, 2018 CATHOLIC SCHOOLS 19 Queen of Apostle Students Color for Kindness On March 14, the students of Queen of Apostles joined schools around the country in the National Walkout. In light of the school theme for this year, “Practice Kindness” the students marked 17 minutes of their day in honor of the 17 lives lost in Parkland, Florida by coloring various images related to kindness and ways to express them. With the purpose of unanimously participating in the National Walkout and to observe the time in a mean- ingful and age appropriate way, the students said a prayer and were given a different coloring page that centered around the theme of Practicing Kind- ness. These ranged from sayings like ‘Be Kind’ and ‘The Right Time to be Kind is all The Time’. These colored pages are now displayed around the whole school with an intention to serve as a reminder that we should at all times practice kindness and live our lives in the image of Christ. To reiterate what Bishop McGrath quoted from the bible, ‘Every life is precious in the eyes of the Lord and every person is made in the likeness of God,’ the students of Queen of Apostles are imbibing this principle in a solemn and meaningful way through the year. Saint Christopher Middle School Students Participate in National School Walkout Saint Christopher middle schoolers gathered on March 14 to participate in the National Walkout to protest gun violence in our nation’s schools. Under cloudy, gray skies, the Saint Christopher middle schoolers gathered on March 14 to participate in the Na- tional Walkout to protest gun violence in our nation’s schools. For 17 minutes, the students, joined by members of the faculty and parish staff, recited the Rosary. Each prayer of the Rosary was led by a different student from sixth, seventh and eighth grade. United in solidarity with more than 2,000 other schools across the United States, the middle schoolers voiced their hope that young people could be- come the agents for peace and positive change in our world. Their presence was a poignant statement of support for Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, as well as a testament to the power of prayer. Saint Leo the Great Students Participate in National Student Walkout On July 28, 1917 a coalition of Afri- can Americans and religious groups came together for a Silent March add- ing to the Civil Rights Movement. On March 14, Saint Leo the Great School students were not participat- ing in a political movement or even a religious movement. The students and staff participated in a Silent Walkout showing their care and compassion for the lives lost on February 14, 2018 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The Saint Leo students silently honored the 17 human beings who lost their lives. They also prayed for the gunman. The Student Council Members and SPIRIT Squad prepared the Prayer Service and Silent Walkout. Motorists passing by honked their horns to show their tribute to the lives lost. A motorist went so far as to send an email to the school office expressing his gratitude to the students and staff for their reverence and their kindness.
