About the university of hull
Our distinguished history
Since its establishment in 1927, the University of Hull has gone
from strength to strength. A forward-facing institution with a
past that is rich in tradition, it has an illustrious history that
includes the development of liquid crystal-technology and
features some of the most inspirational figures of modern times.
Founded through the philanthropy of a local entrepreneur,
Thomas Robinson Ferens, and originally an offshoot of the
University of London, the University received its royal charter in
1954 – which makes it England’s 14th-oldest university. It has
since expanded to acquire a second campus in Scarborough
and the area adjacent to the Cottingham Road site, now home
to the Hull York Medical School, the Faculty of Health and Social
Care, the Business School and the Enterprise Centre. A major
continuing investment programme makes both campuses
excellent places to study and socialise.
Originally designed by Sir Algernon Tudor-Craig in 1928, the
University coat of arms is part of our official heraldry. You
will see the traditional coat of arms on memorabilia, in some
literature and at ceremonial occasions. The five elements in the
coat of arms are now used in our corporate logo – presenting a
consistent picture to all who use our services and showing that
we all belong to the same organisation and share its aims.
Our highly satisfied students
The University is committed to ensuring that its students
benefit not only from a first-class education but also from a fully
rounded university experience. This means that students here
are encouraged to excel in their extra-curricular activities as
well as in their academic studies.

The University of Hull
The University works closely with its students’ union to ensure
that students are represented throughout their studies, and
– with more than 100 societies and sports clubs, extensive
welfare and support provision and an award-winning nightclub
on site – Hull University Union is one of the most active and
successful students’ unions in the country. It won the Higher
Education Students’ Union of the year in the NUS Awards 2012.
The National Student Survey – the cornerstone of the UK’s
independent quality assurance framework – constently places
Hull among the leading group of universities for student
satisfaction. The University’s continuing good results in the NSS
league tables proves that students at the University continue to
be among the happiest in the country.
Our highly valued staff
The University understands the importance of having a wellmotivated and positive workforce. That is why we offer our
employees first-rate professional and personal development
opportunities, competitive salary and pension packages, and an
environment that encourages excellence and diversity.
We recognise that our staff are our greatest resource and the
key to our future success. Your contribution and commitment
to the institution will be welcomed and greatly appreciated,
and together we can look forward to continuing the University’s
distinguished record of achievement.
