Interplanetary Debris

Meteors

The term meteor refers to the flash of light created by a piece of interplanetary debris being burnt up in the atmosphere whereas the term meteoroid refers to the piece of debris itself, which is often smaller than 1 km, normally only millimeters big.

Meteorite refers to what survives the atmosphere and lands on Earth.

Meteoroids are thought to be from asteroids in the asteroid belt, or the moon, comets and Mars. Meteoroids orbit around the sun, the fastest travel at 42 km/s.
