The Closest Killer

Where do I even start this story? I guess the day I asked him to be my best man.
“So, Dani, what do you say?” I said, “Want to be my best man?”
“Let me think,” he said, “Of course! Why would I not be my best friend’s best man? I mean we’ve only known each other for our entire lives. So when’s the wedding?”
“Well, we were hoping next July, in Hawaii.”
“I’ll be there man.”
“Thanks,” I said.
“But, how does Jessica feel about it?” he said.
“She’s fine with it dude, don’t worry.”
That was a good day. My only concern was hoping that my friend would be there at my wedding to be my best man. I had known Dani since I was 2. I met him during daycare, then we went to the same schools. After graduating I wanted to become an investigative journalist, it was something I always wanted to do. He wanted to travel the world, he told me he didn’t need a job, he just wanted to live life and make money by traveling. I never really questioned it, but I was happy for him, even if it meant we won’t see each other that much.
That night I was telling Jessica that Dani accepted my invitation.
“You know how I feel about him, John,” she said, “He always gives off weird vibes and I don’t really trust him.”
“I know, but he’s my best friend, he needs to be here for this,” I said.
“Fine, but I don’t want to be near him that much. The more distance between us, the better.”
I’ll never understand why Jessica didn’t like Dani, he was such a nice guy, he was always there whenever we were in some sort of financial situation or if someone in my family died. I just hoped that she would come around after seeing him at the wedding.
