THEY SAY WE ARE EQUAL
by Arleen Godoy
We came here peaceful
Bringing beautiful colors, but it’s all gone to waste
yet they say we are equal
A police man’s gun to the head
holding their bags tighter to their waist
We came here peaceful
“your covid-21 put my grandpa to bed”
pulling their eyes towards the ends of their face
yet they say we are equal
They try to pull off her scarf to see her barehead,
telling her she caused the 2001 disaster
We came here peaceful
They screamed speak English instead
claiming their jobs are gone in a haste
yet they say we are equal
He must be smelly they said
probably works at 711, what poor taste
We came here peaceful
yet they say we are equal
