“I’m not just a worthless slob. I’m gonna do it all, and all Franny’s gonna be able to do is sit and watch” Laney thought to herself, pacing back and forth with another textbook in the crease of her arm. When she was flipping back to the page she left off on, out of nowhere, lay a shiny golden coin. Her eyes seemed to light up as she went to get a closer look at her next little bundle of luck. Laney picked it up, and ran to put it in her chest. After safely stashing it inside, she ran back to her bed and continued reading, the coin a bright ray of hope in her chest.
Days later, about to leave class, her teacher stopped Laney in her tracks. Her forehead immediately became pelted with sweat. Oh what is it now…
“I see how hard you're working Laney.
You should be very proud of yourself”
Almost at a loss for words, Laney replied, “Oh, thank you Mrs. Lucy”
“Yes, and the reason I stopped you was that I think you’re ready”
“Ready for...what?”
“Well, next year, everyone in the class will be taking a special test, which will bring you to a new school, and begin a new chapter in your life.”
“Yes I’ve heard about that, but what does that have to do with me?” I questioned, leaving out the obvious answer, thinking it was too good to be true…
“What? I think you are ready to take it now!”
“Wait, you really think so?”
“Why, I know so! With your grades and intelligence, I think you are destined for great things Laney. Plus, I’m sure your parents would be very proud of you once you’ve given them this marvelous news!”
“Oh yes, I’m sure they will,” I exclaimed, the lie slipping out of my lips before I could take it back.
“The test will be given the next time I see you,
before school at 15 past 6!”
“You can hope to see me there!” I gave her a quick smile before I ran off, my heart soaring with new possibilities.
“This is it! I can’t wait to te-” Laney wondered before she stopped. Getting this opportunity was hard enough, but getting Big Franny to accept was a whole other story.
