No . 130 The Trusty Servant
Dates for your Diary
The Government announcement of a second lockdown brings more restrictions on any face-toface events we can offer . However , we are going to be offering some virtual events at which we would be delighted to meet you .
Meanwhile , you may wish to become a member of the Friends of Winchester College , who are currently enjoying many online virtual lectures and offerings .
The Friends offer wide variety of lectures and events throughout the year , ranging from jazz evenings to talks on Milton and Shakespeare . A particular highlight is the Kenneth Clark competition when six boys , chosen out of the entire of VI Book , present short lectures on artworks of their choosing . The standard of performance is remarkably high .
A new feature of the 2020-2021 programme is that we have been given permission ( once COVID – 19 allows ) to hold drinks parties before talks in areas of the College not generally open to the public , for example the Dons ’ Common Room gardens . This will add much to what we offer , allowing the Friends to meet and enjoy a drink in spectacular surroundings before an event .
If you would like to become a Friend , please do visit : www . wincollsoc . org / friends / friends-of-winchester-college .
Visiting Win Coll - security arrangements
At this present time we are unable to have external visitors to the school . As and when the school fully reopens to visitors , OWs and Don Soc members are most welcome , but we have been asked by the Security Committee to remind those who wish to visit the school ( other than for an event , when the instructions issued may be different , or when visiting as a spectator at matches ) that they must contact the Porters ’ Lodge to check whether the school is open for visitors . This should be done at least 24 hours in advance of the planned visit , or by Friday midday for weekends : + 44 ( 0 ) 1962 621227 or porters @ wincoll . ac . uk . They should arrive at the Porters ’ Lodge and not enter by any other gate . They will be asked to produce identification and sign the OW or Don Soc visitors ’ books ; they will be issued with a visitor ’ s badge and lanyard , to be worn conspicuously during their visit , please , and returned as they leave through the same gate . They will also be given a map showing the areas of the school that may be visited . Safeguarding and child-protection regulations become ever tighter and OWs and ex-staff are no longer allowed to come and go at will .
If you wish to visit a boarding house , please contact the housemaster well in advance to see if this is possible and please do not turn up on the doorstep unannounced .
