Recent Win Coll Soc Events
Duncan Louis Stewart Lecture 2020 There have not been many opportunities for anything approaching live events , but the Win Coll Soc team was delighted to organise a successful day on 1 st October for the School and separately for invited guests . During the day we were privileged to screen the Netflix film David Attenborough : A Life on Our Planet ; in the evening , Keith Scholey , one of the film ’ s producers , delivered his own powerful lecture entitled ‘ Rebalancing the Planet ’.
Duncan Stewart ( G , 03-08 ) died during his gap year , while working as a marine biologist . The foundation set up in his memory part-funded the production of the film with WWF and
Netflix . Duncan had been Secretary of Natural History Soc , and he invited Sir David Attenborough to be a guest speaker . Sir David remains a patron of the NHS , incidentally the oldest society in the School .
The screenings were a school premiere , after Winchester was given permission to show the film before its release on Netflix . Although over 350 men in the school watched the film or listened to Keith ’ s lecture , we could not bring guests on site to share the occasion . We were fortunate , therefore , that the Theatre Royal Winchester opened its doors for us and thus jointly , with Win Coll Soc , entertained a live audience for the first time since March .
Keith Scholey with HM
The Headmaster , quoted by The Hampshire Chronicle , said , ‘ It was important to us to hold our first event since March at the Theatre Royal and on such an important topic . Keith ’ s powerful message about the state of our planet and our own part to play in its future made a real impact on all those in attendance .’
Goddard Day 2020
One of the ways by which the school shows its appreciation to those who have pledged a legacy in their wills is through Goddard Day , normally held on a Saturday early in September . This year meeting for a Chapel service and an enjoyable lunch in New Hall was not possible . Instead , a video was put together released on Goddard Day for all members of the Goddard Legacy Society . It comprised aerial footage of the
College ; an anthem sung by Chapel Choir remotely from each of their homes and then edited together ; a welcome from the Chairman , David Fellowes ( I , 63-67 ); an interview with the Warden ; and a reply by the senior member of the Society , Stuart Watson ( F , 36-41 ).
Normally about 125 people attend Goddard Day . This year , the video was available on YouTube for all 250 members , whether based in the UK or overseas .
If you are interested in leaving a legacy to Winchester College , which would help to achieve the school ’ s target for bursarial support amongst other things , please do contact Patrick Walker ( I , 65-70 ) via pncw @ wincoll . ac . uk . Legacies can be of any size and the amount can remain confidential to the donor .
