No.128 The Trusty Servant Wiccamica Do Co Ro: Ave atque Vale In addition to those mentioned in May’s edition, Adrian Adlam (A, 79-81; Music, since 1999) left at the end of Cloister Time to focus on his musical career, particulary as artistic director of the International Freden Music Festival. We also said goodbye to Eva Ridout (German, since 2003, retired) and Martina Fitzgerald (Moberly Librarian since 2005). During Short Half, Revd Dr Simon Thorn (D, 79-84; Chaplain since 2015) left to take up a post at the University Church in Oxford. Sarah Harden (Classics, since 2013) also departed for Oxford University to become Senior Instructor in Latin and Ancient Greek. Stephen Anderson wrote her the following verses: Wiccamicos olim pueros summa arte docebas iam grates nostras, docta puella, cape. (Wykeham’s boys you’ve taught with highest art; Now with our thanks, o learned girl, depart.) We offer a warm welcome to this half’s new dons: Hannes Buckow (MFL, from studying at Bristol University), Dr William Guast (Classics, from teaching at Bristol University), Dr Andrew Guerriero (Biology, from Farnborough Sixth Form College), Ben Gould (Economics, from studying at Durham University), Dr Alex Latter (Head of English, from King’s Canterbury), Tom Quayle (English, from Magdalen College School), Catherine McNally (Gordon Fellow, JP Div and Classics, from studying at University of Pennsylvania), Adam Rattray (Head of Art History, from Wellington), Nick Thorpe (Head of Mathematics, from Bradfield), James Toll (Head of Strings, from Royal Northern College of Music) and James Westwell (Junior Fellow, Music, from studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama). Dr Sarah Griffin has also joined as Junior Curator. In January Mark Burley will join us from Canford as Director of Sport. Achievements: Academic Richard Danylyuk (Coll) was part of the gold-medal-winning UK Chemistry Olympiad team. Max Wong (F) won a silver medal as part of the UK’s Astrophysics Olympiad team. Carson White (Coll) achieved the highest mark out of 10,000 competitors in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge, despite being a year young for the competition. Dr Galliver (History) has written a history of his former employer, Ampleforth College (Gracewing). Dr Cullerne, Dr French (both Physics) and Om Kanchanasakdichai (H, 13-18) have published two articles in Physics Education: ‘Iterative calculus methods and the epidemiology of Eyam’ and ‘Numerical methods as an introduction to calculus’. 19 Achievements: Sporting Lords achieved their best season in the last decade, with 13 wins and a draw from their 20 fixtures, including a very satisfying win against Eton. Yearlings A also had a fine summer, winning 11 of their 13 games, with star batsman Wilf La Fontaine Jackson (B) averaging 198. Joseph Oluwabusola (C) is at the time of writing representing Nigeria in the Under-17 FIFA World Cup. Pavilioned in splendour Elaborate Meccano sets have been springing up around the campus over the last few months. College Hall (below left) had its century-old 40-tonne lead roof removed, transported to Leicester for recasting, and restored to its position. The firm concerned were very pleased that only 15% of the weight needed to be replaced with new metal. Best not to wonder where those 6 tonnes can have gone after washing off the roof. The middle section of the Michlā roof is also been replaced as the renovation project there continues apace. And the temporary sports hall is rising on KP prior to the demolition of the old PE Centre. Interested readers can find out more about that project at www.winchestercollege.org/ southern-campus-development.
