Winchester College Summer Party
2018: on a sweltering London summer
evening, the windows of the fabulous
Drapers’ Hall were flung open to cool
down the assembled throng of 230
parents. The hard work of Tor Machado
and her two deputies Sarah Wigley and
Sophie Meek, together with the rest
of the committee, bore fruit in what
proved to be a most enjoyable event.
First-class food and buckets of sparkling
rosé, generously donated by Hambledon
T he T rusty S ervant
Vineyard, ensured that guests had plenty
of energy to dance to excellent music,
provided by a young DJ with superlative
taste (ie 1975-80). The highpoint of
course was the auction, raising £63,000
in support of Outdoor Learning.
Domum 2018: on Saturday 30 th June,
140 leavers of the Class of 2018,
together with their parents, assembled
for drinks in the Warden’s Garden on a
beautiful evening after a special service
in Chapel; parents then repaired to
the Win Coll Soc marquee for dinner.
Following the mob rule of previous
years, a scheme had been hatched for
parents to assemble in Chamber Court
in a disciplined manner to see their sons
descend from College Hall. Leavers
and parents were finally reunited in
the Warden’s Garden to sing Domum,
accompanied by a small brass band. The
new arrangements were judged a success.
Freddie’s 150 th Reunion: on 2 nd October, 195 Freddieites, including current members of VI Book, gathered in the sumptuous
surroundings of Merchant Taylors’ Hall to mark the 150 th Anniversary of Freddie Morshead’s founding of E House; this was rather
more than the 121 who dined at the Connaught Rooms in January 1969. Guests, and in particular the Sen Man Sir James Dunbar-
Nasmith (40-44), were welcomed by Jamie McManus, Housemaster, and with entertaining speeches from David Hurley (76-80;
currently Master of Chapel Music) and Sir David Clementi (62-67; quondam Warden). Domum was sung to the old tune, to the
complete mystification of anyone younger than 30! An excellent atmosphere, all were agreed, led to a most memorable evening.
