Archibald George Charles Forde Campbell Murdoch( C, 24-29): died 29.6.2016 aged 105 as Sen Man. Trinity College, Oxford( MA 1950), after which he attended Royal College of Music 1933-35, sang for BBC Radio and successfully auditioned for Glyndebourne. He studied with Willi Domgraf-Fassbaender in Berlin 1937. Because of poor eyesight he joined the London Auxiliary Fire Service 1939-45; he converted to Roman Catholicism 1941. He started a teaching career, becoming assistant master at Cumnor House School 1945, then assistant master and headmaster of the Thomas More School 1946-55, followed by All Hallows School, Lyme Regis 1958, St Luke’ s College, Exeter 1959, St Joseph’ s School, Devizes 1960-62 and finally Carterton County Primary School 1962-71. Music and singing were his passion. He moved to Malta on retirement, returning to the United Kingdom in 1985. Married 1932 Sheila Haigh, who died in 2003 aged 100 after 71 years of marriage. Benjamin Burford King( Coll, 30-35): died 27.2.2016 a few months short of his 100th birthday as 3rd Sen Man. Bib Prae, Maths Prize 1934. Scholarship, Trinity College, Cambridge 1935. Maths 1 Pt 1, 2 Pt 2, BA 1938. On the outbreak of war he joined the RAFVR, with whom he served with Coastal Command in Wick and later in Gibraltar, where he listened to Luftwaffe radio communications to track the movements of German and Italian aircraft. He was later assigned to Bletchley Park where he was privy to‘ Ultra’, whose secret he closely guarded for 30 years. He was then moved to the British Military Mission, Washington, where he was responsible for liaison between the US Navy and the US Army, for which he was awarded the US Legion of Merit. Demobbed as Wing Commander 1946. After the war he joined the newly established International Bank for Reconstruction and Development( the World Bank) in 1947. He spent 34 years there, during which time he participated in economic missions to Iraq and Spain and was a member of the Bell Mission studying India’ s economy. He was the World Bank’ s Chief Economist 1968-69 and Director of the Development Economics Department 1978-81: an extremely influential Briton at the World Bank HQ. Married( 1) 1945 Dorothy Walbridge;( 2) 1968 Georgia Konstantinopoulos, who survives him with their son and two sons from his first marriage.
James Irvine Watson( F, 31-37): died 27.4.2016 aged 97 as 4th Sen Man. Brother of HSRW( F, 36-41). His grandfather had been born before the Battle of Waterloo. Exhibitioner. In 1935 he featured in The Hampshire Chronicle for his admired performance in the Chawkerite play Outward Bound. Christ Church, Oxford 1937, 2 Modern Classics 1939; MA 1944. Commissioned into the Royal Artillery 1939 with whom he served at the Combined Operations Training Centre, Dunoon, before joining 18th Division bound for Singapore. The Division arrived in time to be captured. But the ship in which the anti-tank regiment travelled broke down and returned to port. After attending Staff College he served on the staff in India. After the war he first worked for the LMS Railway 1946-47. He then embarked on a highly successful career with the British Council: for 22 of the 31 years he was the Secretary( chief executive). He was appointed OBE in 1972. Retired 1978. He devoted his retirement to York, firstly as Chairman, York Diocesan Care of Churches Advisory Committee 1980-86, then Trustee York Minster Fund 1989-93, Chairman, York Minster Fabric Advisory Committee 1991-93. Founder Trustee, Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust 1998- 2000. He knew every Archbishop of York from William Temple to John Sentamu. He was appointed Knight of Papal Order of Saint Sylvester 1982 and Deputy Lieutenant of North Yorkshire 1991. In everything that he did there was great precision, but despite this focus on accuracy he was capable of sustaining all his friendships. Survived by his brother and nephews and niece.
Arthur Ivens Spriggs( D, 33-38): died 12.12.2015 aged 96 as 8th Sen Man. Brother of EAS( D, 31-36). New College, Oxford, MRCP 1944, DM 1952. Commissioned RAMC 1944. One of the first doctors to enter Bergen-Belsen in April 1945. Demobbed as Captain. He then embarked on a career in pathology at Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford; eventually he became Consultant Cytologist for the United Oxford Hospitals 1960, where he set up one of the first regional cervicalcancer screening services. He always instilled in his department a sense of fun and friendliness and the willingness to share knowledge with visiting students and researchers. Publications included History of Clinical Cytology 1980 and Atlas of Serious Fluid Cytopathology 1989. Elected FRCP 1963 and FRCPath 1973. President, the European Federation of Cytology Societies 1979-81. He retired in 1984, after which he studied and collected oriental porcelain and antique lace. Married 1943 Gereth Watson, who
