NO.122
In Search of Ernst
uncovers the hidden
family history of the
Königsgarten family,
which was uprooted
and decimated by the
Nazis during the
Second World War.
Only now, following
the discovery of
family papers and research in archives in
the Czech Republic and Austria, can the
fate of the author’s grandfather Ernst and
the untold histories of the author’s parents
be told. MHM Garton (C, 60-65) has
unearthed the full story of his family’s past
and his father’s battles with the Home
Office to obtain British nationality. So
thoroug h were the Nazi records and so
carefully have they been preserved that
even the inventories of Ernst’s confiscated
possessions are still in existence today for
all to read. A profoundly moving and
well-written family memoir detailing the
fanaticism and multiple tragedies which
afflicted Europe in the mid-20th century.

Making Waves is a history of the Royal
Yacht Squadron by AG Martin (C, 6771) with a foreword by HRH the Duke of
Edinburgh. Founded in 1815, the
Squadron is the world’s most prestigious
yacht club, counting among its members
Prince Philip – to say nothing of its
patron, the Queen. Located at Cowes
Castle on the Isle of Wight, it consists of
an elite membership of 400 yacht owners
and sailing
enthusiasts, all
dedicated to
promoting
yachting in its
many forms.
This beautifully
illustrated book
commemorates
the bicentennial of the Squadron, tracing
its history from the founding to the
present and telling the stories of key
members, major races, and the many
changes to yachting and the club over the
decades. 288 pages, 50 colour plates, 50
halftones; Unicorn Press; ISBN: 9781910065686.
CS Medlam (F, 62-66) has written a
handbook for the professional and
amateur cellist called Approaches to the
Bach Cello Suites, which is designed to
provide all the
necessary background
for an informed
interpretation. His
conclusion is that
Bach wrote the suites
for himself to play on
a violoncello da spalla,
or small ‘shoulder
16
cello’, held across the chest, supported by
a ribbon and played like a violin. It is
published by Fretwork Editions;

WM Owton (I, 72-76) has witten a fastmoving sword-and-sorcery adventure,
Exile. A sequel will
appear later in the
year. Martin has been
writing since the mid
90s and has published
over 20 short stories,
but this is his first
novel publication.

Exploring Doubt by
Alex Wright (E, 7983) discusses the rich
and varied ways in
which answers to ‘the
big questions’ – about
faith, belief,
authenticity and the
existence of
‘something else’ –
have always been most effectively
articulated through the language not of
absolute conviction, but of the
marvelously improbable and ultimately
unknowable. Darton, Longman & Todd
Ltd; ISBN: 978-0232530605.
