He directed the BBC Chronicle documentary on Rennes le Château, which sparked wide interest in the Templars and Poussin; other films included Beryl Markham’s life and the making of Kent’s architecture: his cultural and general knowledge, unassuming, seemed encyclopaedic. He also took a keen interest in UK and European current affairs, together with Indian politics. Fly-fishing had been a precious hobby until, in later life, he suffered a major stroke. He resolved all adverse events with characteristic courage, honesty, never complaining: for several years, he was called by the Integrated Neurological Service to talk about his experience.
