colleagues and was seen as a breath of
fresh air by others. A good deal had

he left 5 years later, and he did it: it
was a time of significant expansion
and transition for the immigration
appeals system. Chairman, British/
Irish Society 1993-2008; author of The
Minstrel Boy: Francis Ledwidge and the
Literature of his Time 2006. Married

Society, going to concerts in St Peter’s
Church and acting as a guide at the

survives him with their son and 2
daughters.
Max Rendall (I, 47-52):
died 20.12.2019. Son of RAR; great
nephew of MJR (Headmaster,
(1911‑24), brother of TMR, father of
JDR. Dom Fox & Burton Exhibition,
Jun and Sen Mill Prize, Rendall Prize;
School Exhibition Trinity College
Cambridge, 2(ii) Nat Sci 1956, BA,
MA; MRCS, LRCP; MB, BChir 1959;
FRCS 1964; pre-clinical studies at
Middlesex Hospital; junior posts at
Middlesex, Central Middlesex and
Guy’s Hospitals; Research Fellow,
Harvard Medical School 1967; at the
relatively early age of 34 appointed
Consultant, Guy’s Hospital, where
he remained for 26 years, Clinical
Superintendent from 1981: his tact
and politeness enabled him to defuse
the resistance to change of some
older surgeons. He then developed a
second career in addiction medicine
and was a robust critic of the laws on
recreational drug use: he published
Legalise: the only way to combat drugs,
an elegantly written volume on
which he would work during breaks
at the Stapleford clinic in Belgravia.
Married 1962 Mary Debevoise who
survives him, together with their son.

Christopher Alfred (John) Fripp
(I, 48-53): died 5.6.2017. Son of
ATF. VI (capt); 2 Lt RHA 1953-5,
serving in Egypt where he managed
to drive off the road and get his
tank bogged in the sand. Scholar
Christ Church Oxon, 2 Hist, BA
1958; ACA 1961. Became closely
involved with The Process Church
of the Final Judgment, a religious
cult, subsequently the Foundation
Faith of the Millennium. Co‑founder,
chief financial officer and then
President, Best Friends Animal
Sanctuary, Kanab, Utah, which for
the last 30 years has been running
the nation’s largest no-kill sanctuary
for companion animals and building
effective programs that reduce the
number of animals entering shelters.
His strength, stability and unflappable
demeanour naturally placed him at
the centre of things when times were
most difficult in the early days of Best
Friends. Married Celeste Ann.
Francis Wyatt Gordon Clark
(G, 48‑53): died 30.3.2020. Son
of NJGC; 3rd generation of
Wykehamists, father to son; brother

A Renaissance man and always very
much a Francophile: never happier
than when in Brittany - other than
on his beloved Exmoor. Married
1960 Nancy Toyne, who survives
him together with three sons and a
daughter.
