In retirement he acted as Treasurer for Amnesty International , the National Children ’ s Orchestra and the University of the Third Age . In 2001 he set off by himself on a 50-day tour of Australia to meet old friends and explore pastures new . His last words , addressed to his wife , were simple and very appropriately , ‘ Thank you .’ He is survived by Damaris , his wife of 52 years , and their two sons and two daughters .
Anthony Valentine Barford ( E , 42-46 ): died 28.10.2014 . National Service with the RAMC , after which he started his medical training , first at University College of South Wales , BSc 1951 . He fenced for the University of Wales . He then attended Welsh National School of Medicine , MB , BCh 1956 . He first worked as a House Officer at Morriston Hospital , Swansea and then after training at Radcliffe Hospital , Oxford he started a long career as a geriatrician , in which he ended up as a Senior Consultant in East Birmingham Hospital 1969-95 . During this time he was involved in developing two new purpose-built units and was a staunch supporter of the West Midland Institute of Geriatric Medicine as secretary and editor of the house journal . FRCP ( Edinburgh ) 1967 . He retired in 1995 to live near Salcombe , where he embraced the Arts through NADFAS , founding a local society and becoming Chairman for the south-west area . Throughout his life he had an interest in skiing , golf , shooting , computers , radio ham and photography and was a very accomplished pianist . He always saw the good things in people . Married 1986 Veronica Chester , who survives him with his stepson .
John Martin Button ( F , 43-47 ): died 14.1.2018 . Brother of RMB ( F , 44-49 ). Co Prae . Brasenose College , Oxford , 2 Law 1950 . MA 1952 . Qualified as a solicitor with Clifford Chance 1954 . He then made a career move to merchant banking with Gresham Trust 1960-69 .
He became a director of Ansbacher & Co 1970-96 and became Chief Executive of Ansbacher Offshore Group 1971-96 , expanding the business to the Bahamas , Cayman Islands , the British Virgin Islands , Monaco and Zurich . He then set up the Federal Trust in Guernsey in 1996-2016 . He was a keen yachtsman throughout his life , a passion he gained at Winchester when he cycled from Winchester to Southampton to sail . He was cruising together with his wife in their yacht ‘ Rapscallion ’ right up to 2016 . He helped to restart the Sailing Club at Winchester after the war . He is survived by Ruth , his wife of 63 years , and their three sons and a daughter .
Hubert ( Hugh ) Gaitskell Ashton ( E , 43-48 ): died 28.10.2017 . Son of CTA ( E , 15-20 ) and father of CJA ( E , 70-79 ). National Service , Irish Guards , with whom he led the Bank Picquet from St James to the Bank of England . Trinity College , Cambridge , 2 Economics and Law , MA 1970 . FCA 1966 with Peat , Marwick , Mitchell & Co 1953-61 . He first worked for Schroders 1961-85 , rising to be Head of Corporate Finance . He became Director at Hanson Plc 1985- 89 and finally Chairman of the Close Brothers Group 1989-95 . When the bank was bombed by the IRA in 1992 he visited the scene of the bombing on the Saturday , dressed for a wedding , and was interviewed with the Lord Mayor . He was a non-executive director of BAA Plc 1986-93 and a Tax Commissioner 1972-2005 . He was church warden for St Peter ’ s , South Weald for 20 years ; was on the Court of Essex University 1971-2005 ; President of South Weald Cricket Club 1981-2004 . He became High Sheriff of Essex 1983 / 84 and DL for Essex 1983-2005 . He was a liveryman with Skinners ’ Company for 62 years , serving as Master 1986 / 87 , during which year the Company celebrated its 660 th Anniversary . He was on the Governing Bodies of Tonbridge School from 1992 , being Chairman 1999-2002 , and of Brentwood School from 1975 , rising to be Chairman 1990-96 . He was a Trustee of the Butler Trust ( Prison Service
Award Scheme ) 1991-96 . He was an Essex man to his roots but his deepest and closest loyalty was to his wife , Anna and his family , on one occasion involving a helicopter flight from a prize-giving at Marlborough to a sports day at Abberley Hall . He was survived for three months by Anna , his wife of 61 years , and their three sons and a daughter .
John Francis Robert Ryall ( I , 43-48 ): died 8.2.2018 . Brother of MJR ( I , 39-44 ). National Service , Royal Tank Regiment . New College , Oxford , 3 Jur 1952 . MA 1956 . Westcott House , Cambridge 1952- 54 . Ordained 1954 . He was first curate at Petersfield 1954-56 . Subsequently at St Mary ’ s Portsea , Warblington with Emsworth , St Agnes , Freshwater Bay , Frating with Thorrington , Great and Little Yeldham and finally at Shalfleet in the Isle of Wight before he retired in 1995 . Married ( 1 ) Doris Burgess ( died 1999 ) and ( 2 ) 2000 Patricia Lower ( died 2006 ). He is survived by his neice .
Roger William Barklam ( C , 44-48 ): died 14.11.2017 . National Service , Royal Artillery 1949 . Trinity College , Oxford . He then worked as an insurance broker with Lloyds from 1952 . He became Chairman of Hughes-Gibb and later a director of Faber and Dumas . He specialised in racehorse insurance and devised a bespoke policy for the US thoroughbred Secretariat , who won the Triple Crown of the Kentucky Derby , the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes in the US in 1973 . He was also responsible for insuring Shergar who was kidnapped in 1983 and never seen again . He also insured the famous boxing kangeroo , Cassius Clay . He had the talent of switching effortlessly from being a no-nonsense businessman into an effervescent charmer . Married 1962 Angela ( Goo ) Butters , who died 2002 . He is survived by their two sons and a daughter .
Neil Kenneth Maitland ( G , 45-47 ): died 13.1.2018 . Brother of JSM ( G , 39-44 ). He was evacuated to Canada in 1940 , returning in 1945 on HMS Nelson . He came to Winchester for VI
