Simon Aubrey Robin Hood Hastings- Bass( K, 64-69): died 6.10.2017, Lords and Soccer XI. Trinity College, Cambridge. His working life was spent in Newmarket, much of it in the Insurance Department of the British Bloodstock Agency. Betting was always a fascination and several household items were named after betting successes. The hoover owed its existence to a winning bet on My Aunt Fancy! He shared many horses with his mother, including El Rey, which won the Newbury Spring Cup in 1988. Latterly ill health dogged him and finally he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. He always had an irrepressible sense of fun and could extract the quirkiness out of any ostensibly bland situation. Married 1997 Ann Mason, who survives him.

In 2007 he embarked on a Computer Science and Maths degree at Bristol University, where he gained a diploma. He was setting up the Brew Tea Pub in London and building his dream home on the Côte d’ Azur at Ossum near Plan de la Tour when he died with a brain aneurysm. He had fierce courage and when aged 54 he was mugged by two muggers on a motorcycle; he ran after them roaring and was rewarded by the return of his rucksack. His intelligence was bubbling to be expressed. In 2012 he started Composium, bags for kitchen composting. Married 2015 Katherine Jones, whom he met in 1982, who survives him with their two daughters.

He then embarked on a career in the City in finance and IT. He remained an avid reader and keen literary critic. In accord with his Buddhist faith he asked the biggest questions and in doing so he found meaning in the smallest things –‘ Where every particle of dust breathes forth its joy.’ Married 2010 Venetia Harwood-Smart, who survives him with their two sons.
Thomas( Tom) Henry Ralph Horton( I, 98-03): died 23.10.2017. Drew Travel Scholarship, which he spent exploring and drawing in Amsterdam. But by then depression was beginning to surface and he withdrew to the family home. However, when the family moved to a new house he took on a new life and threw himself into tidying up the woods surrounding the house, creating vistas and glades. He then embarked on the exhausting task of thinning the rhododendrons and azaleas. He became hugely knowledgeable about plants including their Latin names. His housemaster, Rob Wyke, wrote that he was grateful to have known Tom as a lively, amusing, mischievous schoolboy whose individuality of spirit may have needed a little repressing rather than encouraging. Tom’ s life was short, but he was an intensely visual person who mixed non-conformism with a dash of what he perceived to be stylish. He is survived by his parents and his two sisters and a brother.
