goal with about 20 minutes left and,
despite some flurries into their end, our
legs (and Ed’s ankle) rather gave out
on us and the game fizzled out to them.
Man of the match certainly goes to Ed
Duncan: some great saves, especially
in the first half, to keep us in the game.
The post-mortem mostly involved a
commitment to try not to play on that
3G astro whenever possible! Or at least
a tactics talk with the OW youngsters
before the next one.

OWGS:
Glory in the Halford Hewitt after 70
years of waiting!
64 Schools from across England and
Scotland fielded five pairs of old
boys in the largest truly amateur golf
tournament in the world, held at Royal
Cinque Ports Golf Club. The OWs won
through five rounds to face Ampleforth
in the final, who were duly dispatched
by 4/1. In winning, the OWs lost only
T he T rusty S ervant
five games in six rounds, went down
the 18 th only twice and once only into
extra holes. This was the first time
Win Coll has won the Hewitt since
defeating the Watsonians in 1948 -
they were also defeated finalists in the
inaugural competition in 1924. This win
is a wonderful boost for OW golf and
OWGS is very excited about the shape
of the side for the next ten years and
beyond. Golf in the school is receiving
unprecedented support and focus at
present – and it’s all the more wonderful
to have a platform for success that new
OW golfers may hope to enjoy long into
the future.
The OW team played in the following
foursomes pairings throughout the
tournament as shown from left to right
on the team photograph: Dino Varkey
(D, 94-99) & Claudio Consul (C, 00-02),
Nick Holt (F, 93-98) & Jack Keating (C,
09-14),Tom Hawkings (G, 76-81) & Jay
Varkey (D, 98-03), Tim Lewis (F, 03-08),
& Mark Coulman (K,77-82), Richard
Sanders (K, 84-89) & James Cameron
(K, 03-08). Andrew Tusa was non-
playing Captain as the current Captain
of OWGS.
The annual competition for the Sinister
Pot took place at Sandford Springs Golf
Club on 26 th October. Captain of the
Sinisters was CD Brims (K, 63-68).
Captain of the Dexters was GC Scott-
Malden (D, 62-67). Also playing were JN
Scott-Malden (Coll, 63-68) and AJ Bligh
(D, 61-66). The Pot was won by the
Sinisters for the fourth successive year
and the Dexters are hoping to import a
suitable ‘ringer’ for next year.
OWSC
Alastair Hall reports on the 2018 Belvidere
Cup success: on Saturday 7th April at
Queen Mary Reservoir, the OWSC team
successfully defended the Belvidere
Cup. The conditions were perfect for
J80 match racing: a warm southerly F3/4
breeze and broken sunshine. Winchester
won a Round Robin of 8 teams with a
7-0 score line, and then won the final 3-0
against Abingdon (the currently holders
of the Arrow Trophy). It was generally
acknowledged that we would not have
had the stamina to manage an 11th
race in the day, so a perfect record was
important! Along the way we defeated
the following schools: Abingdon,
Uppingham, Wellington, Pangbourne,
Radley, Charterhouse, Malvern. The
team was as follows: Alastair Hall (D,
95-00), Edward Knight (G, 98-03), James
Markby (C, 93-98), Alastair Morley (B,
93-98). Winchester is now engraved on
the trophy 4 times (2014, 2016, 2017,
2018) out of 4 attempts.
