II poet Keith Douglas. In retirement,
he divided his time between a home in
Dorchester and one in the Dordogne,
dispensing magnificent hospitality.

his three daughters and a son.
John Patrick Latta (H, 1952-57):
died 24.10.2016. A year at Grenoble
University – poor eyesight prevented
him doing National Service. Two years
in Nairobi with an auto dealership
culminating in a road trip to Cape Town.
In 1964 he founded Westacre Trout
Fishery. He was a JP 1986-95 and Area
Commissioner, St John’s Ambulance
1989-96. A keen country sportsman,
he stabled his own hunter, Malarky,
following West Norfolk Foxhounds.
In later years, he was an enthusiastic
touring cyclist covering continental
Europe, Australia, New Zealand and
Ireland as well as CTC trips to Cuba
and Laos. For many years churchwarden
of All Saints, Westacre and a stalwart
on the Parish Council. Sartorially
unforgettable in breeches, woollen
stockings and peaked cap. Married
(1) 1966 Fiona Birkbeck (marriage
dissolved), (2) 1980 Teresa Buxton
(marriage dissolved). He is survived by
his two sons and a daughter.
James Paley Sabben-Clare (Coll, 54-60);
died 8.3.2017. Son of EES-C (Coll, 24-
29) and father of MJS-C (I, 85-90) and
Rebecca MS-C (G, 86-88). Aul Prae,
Latin Prose, Greek Prose and Greek
Verse Prizes. VI 1958-59 (Captain)
and Soccer XI 1960. Scholarship, New
College 1960-64, 1 Cl Mod 1962 and
1 Lit Hum 1964. MA 1967. He started
his teaching at Marlborough College in
1964 before beginning his long career at
Winchester, first as an Assistant Master
in 1968. Head of Classics 1969-79. He
was Second Master 1979-85 before

becoming Headmaster 1985-2000. He
was Chairman HMC 1999. Uniquely
all four members of the family were
on Long Roll 1988 – JPS-C, with
Mary S-C and their son and daughter.
He retired to Dorset where he was
Chairman, Governors of Corfe Castle
Primary School; Trustee, Corfe Castle
Charity; fundraising for Bournemouth
Symphony Orchestra; and The Dorset
Historic Churches Trust. He was a
Governor of Gordonstoun and on the
Governing Body of the British School in
Paris, where he brought order to what
had been chaos. He was a member of
the Academic Steering Group of the
Prince of Wales’s Teaching Institute.
He had a great love of walking. He was
part of a monthly walking group and
he completed the Clarendon Way, the
Yorkshire Three Peaks and finally the
National Three Peaks in his 60s. He
loved opera – in particular the festivals
in Europe. When walking round the
great harbour of Syracuse he took his
group through the great classical battle
there. He was a Renaissance man who
performed brilliantly in so many different
fields. It was said that he could put more
good sense on a single sheet of A4 than
anyone since Tacitus. Married 1969 Mary
Borton, who survives him with their son

Richard Benjamin Adam Watson
(E, 54-59): died 28.5.2015. Head of
House, Junior Duncan Prize for Maths.

Architect 1967. He first worked with the
GLC and finally with Arup Associates.
He is survived by Katherine, his wife of
54 years.

Ralph Anthony Charles Kauntz
(B, 56-61): died 29.1.2017. Brother
of CLMK (B, 60-64) and father of
MRAK (F, 93-98). Soccer XI 1960-61.
FRCA and ACII. After qualifying as
an accountant he had an interesting
early career overseas with the Iranian
Oil Exploration Co, Abadan and then
as Chief Accountant for Marley Tiles
(SA) Ltd, Johannesburg before returning
to the UK to gain qualifications in
the insurance industry. He carved out
a successful career with the Lloyds
underwriting community, becoming
Managing Director Leslie & Godwin
1986. He used his considerable skills for
all his Names. Director Lloyds Members
Agency Services 2000-07. He retired
to Devon where fishing became his
passion. Survived by Judith, with whom
he celebrated their Ruby Wedding
Anniversary in 2016, and their two
sons.
Robert (Rob) Traherne Moggridge (K,
56-61): died 3.3.2017. Son of RCGM
(Coll 28-33). Bramston Prize. Balliol
College, Oxford, 2 Mod Hist BA 1964.
Judo Captain, Black Belt. Postgraduate
Certificate in Education, Bristol
University 1965. He embarked on a long
career in education, teaching in Yeovil,
Southend, Manchester and Chippenham
before becoming Head Teacher, King
Richard School, Portsmouth 1979-88
and finally Head Teacher at Felpham
Community College 1988-2003. In
retirement he continued to work with
Education London and then as School
Improvement Partner in Staffordshire
and Cambridgeshire. He enjoyed
singing with the Saint Endellion Music
Festival. He was invited back to Balliol
to debate the merits of private versus
comprehensive education – his opponent
was Dr Nicholas Tate, Headmaster of
Winchester 2000-03. He was semi-
finalist of Brain of Britain 1983 and
Mastermind 1983. Married 1977 Jane
Pitts, who survives him with their son
and daughter.
