The Tree of Gernika Dinner: on Friday 10 th February 2017, Nick Rankin and George Steer( K, 53-58) were Guests of Honour at a dinner in the Warden’ s Lodgings. Nick had been the tour-guide on the Wykeham Patrons’ trip to the Basque Country last September,‘ in the footsteps of George Lowther Steer’, and George’ s father( Coll, 23-28) had reported so famously on the bombing of the town of Guernica in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War. Nick, whose biography of Steer, Telegram from Guernica, is highly recommended, had used his precious first edition of Steer’ s own The Tree of Gernika( the Basque spelling) as his trusty prop throughout the trip, but it had seen better days. David Fellowes subsequently‘ borrowed’ it in order to commission a complete refurbishment and upgrade by Tim Wiltshire, Wells’ book-binding maestro. 17 other diners were present to witness Steer jun returning Steer sen’ s book back to his biographer.
