Keeping in touch
This edition of The Trusty Servant has a large number of obituaries, 48 in all: in May 2007, it was 32. I think the reason for this increase is that the School grew in numbers after the War from 460 in 1945 to 520 in 1955, rather than anything more sinister: indeed, the evidence is that OWs confound the actuaries and comfortably outpace the English Life Tables. It is a matter of pride that all OWs receive an obituary( unlike at other schools) and Colonel Christopher Van der Noot, our hardworking obituarist, makes much use of the information on our database. This is therefore a plea to all OWs, young and old and not just those with intimations of mortality, to keep us up to date with their careers and achievements: it also helps to fill the pages of‘ OW News’! We will send you a Keeping connected email once a term to update you about events and other information. Please also keep an eye on the Win Coll Soc website – www. wincollsoc. org
The Ralph & Cathy Townsend Bursary Appeal
Thank you for all the generous donations and pledges given in honour of Ralph and Cathy Townsend’ s tireless commitment to Winchester. The £ 2m target has now been surpassed.
Please come to Winchester Match on 17 th June
This is the main opportunity for OWs of all ages to visit the school and to be royally welcomed, fed and watered, with a heavily-subsidised lunch in the Win Coll Soc marquee next to Hunter Tent. If you have not already done so, you will find a reply form enclosed with this issue, giving full details about the day; alternatively, please register and pay on the Win Coll Soc website: www. wincollsoc. org
House 150 th Anniversaries in London- Save the date
We will be holding 150 th Anniversary Dinners for Kenny’ s and Freddie’ s on 6 th February and 2 nd October 2018 respectively. These will take place in the Great Hall of the Merchant Taylors’ Company( Finalist in The London Venue Awards 2016!). Further details will be sent out in due course. 2019 dates for Chawker’ s, Phil’ s, Trant’ s and Hopper’ s are set out on the back page.
Friends of Winchester College
At the start of 2017, the committee approved a substantial grant of £ 7,500 to finance a new project in the Fellows’ Library. This will put an inventory of almost all our medieval collection of books and manuscripts onto a database, which will be available to scholars around the world. In recent years, Dr Richard Foster, the Fellows’ Librarian, and his predecessor, Dr Geoffrey Day, have encouraged the consultation of our significant possessions by visiting researchers. This digitisation of our catalogue will allow us to welcome even more of those in academia who wish to research our wonderful collection.
