Honoring the True Pioneers of Legal Advertising

By Harlan Schillinger
The legal profession as we know it today would look very different were it not for a courageous group of pioneers who challenged convention, endured criticism, and defended a constitutional principle that reshaped our industry forever.
The National Trial Lawyers Advertising Hall of Fame proudly congratulates Morris“ Buddy” Bart and Ken Hardison on their 2026 induction.
Launched five years ago, the National Trial Lawyers Advertising Hall of Fame was created to honor extraordinary contributions to the legal profession dating back to 1977— a defining year marked by the landmark United States Supreme Court decision in Bates v. State Bar of Arizona. That ruling opened the door for law firms across America to advertise their services, grounding legal marketing in First Amendment protection.
At the time, the decision was far from celebrated. Local lawyers and state bar associations fiercely resisted advertising, believing it would undermine the profession’ s dignity. Early adopters faced lawsuits, disciplinary threats, professional ostracism, and personal criticism. To advertise was, in many circles, an act of rebellion.
Yet they persevered.
Pioneers like Buddy Bart and Ken Hardison endured ridicule, fought regulatory battles, and risked reputations to uphold the principle that truthful communication about legal services is protected speech.
Bart became known not only for his courtroom advocacy but also for his vision in reaching everyday people who needed legal help. He believed advertising was not about self-promotion— it was about access and awareness.
Hardison advanced ethical, effective marketing strategies that empowered firms nationwide, educating lawyers on how professionalism and growth could coexist. His influence shaped an entire generation of trial lawyers.
Because of pioneers like them, marketing today is no longer controversial— it is essential. Their courage paved the way for modern law firm growth, consumer access, and a stronger profession.
We are the beneficiaries of their resolve. With gratitude and respect,
