can also be one of the hardest. Much of the work happens behind the scenes, and if you’ re trying to figure it all out on your own, it’ s very easy to burn out.
Over the last year, I’ ve had the opportunity to talk with operators from firms across the country. Different practice areas. Different team sizes. Different personalities.
While there are certainly differing challenges based on firm size, experience level, and a variety of other factors, there is one similarity:
Almost every one of them has, at some point, felt like they were trying to figure out leadership on an island.
As I kept having those conversations, it became obvious that there was a gap. Operators had plenty of books they could read and conferences they could attend, but very few had a room full of peers who understood exactly what they were carrying. That’ s what ultimately led us to create the PILMMA Operator Mastermind.
Not because operators need another binder full of templates, another conference to attend, or another book to read( not that we don’ t love those things). But because they need a room full of peers and expert facilitators who’ ve actually done this work themselves.
People who understand what it’ s like to sit between the firm’ s vision and its execution. People who know the weight of carrying responsibility behind the scenes. People who can challenge you, encourage you, share what worked, and remind you that you’ re not the only one navigating these kinds of decisions.
Because here’ s the reality: the better your operator becomes, the stronger your entire firm becomes. 14 The Trial Lawyer
If you’ re a law firm owner, investing in your operator isn’ t just investing in one employee. You’ re investing in the person— or people— responsible for turning your ideas into reality, building systems that support your team, and creating the infrastructure your firm needs to grow.
And if you’ re the operator reading this, I hope you know this: Leadership can be lonely, but it doesn’ t have to be. Whether you’ re stepping into operations for the first time or you’ ve been doing this work for years, my hope is that you never feel like you have to figure it all out alone.
None of us were meant to lead in isolation. And in my experience, the best operators aren’ t the ones who have all the answers— they’ re the ones who have people they can turn to when the answers aren’ t obvious.
You don’ t have to lead alone. The PILMMA Operator Mastermind was created specifically for COOs, Office Managers, Firm Administrators, and operations leaders who want practical guidance, honest conversations, and a community of peers who truly understand the role. Join a room where you can grow as a leader while helping your firm grow alongside you.
